2003.
135 school-aged asthma patients were enrolled with the goals of
reducing the hospital admission rate, emergency department visits, and
missed school days related to asthma. The study participants combined
for a total of 256 ED visits, 90 hospitalizations, and 959 school days
missed due to asthma between the dates of (school year '01-'02) August
2001 and June 2002. At the conclusion of our research, the 135
patients combined for a total of 49 ED visits, 8 hospitalizations, and
385 school days missed due to asthma between the dates of (school year
'02-'03) August 2002 and June 2003. This represented an 85% reduction
in ED visits, 91% reduction in hospitalizations, and 60% reduction in
ED visits.
