Description of Duties Performed –
Please refer to the attached below for a further understanding of the job duties performed.
2010.3.16~2010.8.20 2010 Census, Norwalk Local Census Office(LCO) of the U.S. Census Bureau
(Economics and Statistics Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce)
: I worked as a Questionnaire Assistance Center(QAC) representative, dispatched to city halls,
libraries, senior centers and churches where public access is provided to assist in any
inquiries on the 2010 census. As the QAC operation came to an end, I was brought into the
Local Census Office to work as a Quality Assurance clerk. Major duties consisted of two
phases, the first being conducting re interviews with the public over the phone to recollect
census data, and the second being comparing the data handed in by field enumerators
against the data collected during the 1st phase to identify any data falsification or procedural
errors committed by the enumerators. At the end of the QA operation, the QA dept was
closed and I was transferred to the Administration dept to work as an Admin clerk where I
assisted in shutting down the Local Census Office.
2009.2.16~2009.3.27 Interpreter for Boston Consulting Group(BCG) on Financial Project
: I worked as the interpreter/translator for a risk management project conducted by BCG for
its client, a well known Financial Holding Group(confidential) in Korea. The project was
launched after the global financial crisis hit the world in 2008 in an attempt to overhaul risk
management within the Group. The work was intense not only because the project was
running on a tight schedule and the business environment was intense as is mostly seen in
consulting projects, but because the project was held at a Holding Group level instead of a
singular company level, requiring the interpreter to become acquainted with its subsidiary
level matters (bank, credit card, stocks, financial investment, life insurance, capital
management and asset management, to name a few) and global economic matters as well.
2007.3.12~2008.4.30 Audit dept Interpreter/Translator of Citibank Korea, Inc.
: I worked as an interpreter/translator for the Standing Auditor and the Audit dept of
Citibank Korea, Inc., performing work for quarterly meetings including the Board of
Directors Meeting, the Audit Committee and the Business Risk, Compliance & Control
Committee Meetings and the weekly Management Committee Meetings. Reports generated
from Branch audits and Inspections carried out 3~4 times weekly were translated.
Externally, the extensive 4 week Comprehensive Audit held every 2 years by the Financial
Supervisory Service(FSS) & the Bank of Korea(BOK) was carried out on the bank as well
as frequent FSS & BOK partial audits.
2006.5.15~12.22 Standard Chartered First Bank Interpreter/Translator Pool
: I worked at the interpreter pool under the HR dept of SC First Bank, dispatched to various
depts within the bank headquarters. I majorly participated in audit related work and during
non audit periods worked for other depts in the fields of consumer banking, corporate
banking, risk, finance, tax and human resources. The types of interpretation encompassed
all sorts including but not limited to high level executive meetings, small scale working level
meetings, conference calls, workshops, business trip meetings and the modes of
interpretation, i.e. simultaneous, whispering or consecutive interpretation were
interchangeably used to best suit the environment. Various types of translation were also
done and the contents of the interpretation/ translation involved all bank related matters.
2005.6.7~2006.5.10 Interpretation/Translation for Credit Card Division(BOT Project) of
Korea Exchange Bank(KEB)
: I managed the interpretation/translation between KEB and Fractal, an India based
consulting company, for a 10 month consulting project sponsored by Visa Inc. for the
analysis of KEB credit card customers. I majorly interpreted for matters in model building,
customer segmentation, MIS reporting system establishment and lectures on modeling
techniques, enabling the communication between 7~8 Indian consultants and 12 KEB
employees.
2005.3.28~5.31 The 6th Global Forum on Reinventing Government
: The Forum was held May 24~27, 2005 at the Convention Hall of COEX, Seoul, Korea, co
hosted by the Korean government and the United Nations. I worked under the Ministry of
Government Administration and Home Affairs managing 56 speakers for the 5 plenary
sessions. Some 140 countries participated in the Forum and the speakers were also invited
from around the world. I served as the contact point for these speakers handling their flight,
accommodation and transportation matters in addition to the presentations.
2004.10.18 Interpretation for President You of KOMCA for <CISAC 2004 World Congress Seoul>
: Provided escort interpretation for President You of KOMCA, which hosted <CISAC 2004
World Congress Seoul> from Oct. 18~21, 2004 at COEX, Seoul, Korea after being referred
by a professor at my graduate school. As I was still a student at the time, the remaining 3 days
were taken care of by another interpreter. As this was escort interpretation, the role was
mainly focused on facilitating communication with other key figures. In addition, I interpreted
for the local media in their interviews with key foreign participants and prepared the English
speech for the President.
2004.10.12. Summarization of Q&A session of Professor Paul Kennedy(Yale University) and Fred
Reichheld(Leader of Loyalty Practice, Bain & Company) at World Knowledge Forum 2004
: I summarized the press conference of Professor Paul Kennedy and Fred Reichheld into
English and Korean for Maeil Business Newspaper, the co host of the 5th World Knowledge
Forum held Oct. 11~13th, 2004 at Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul, Korea. This provided
the basis for the article that came out in the next day’s Maeil Business Newspaper. An
instructor at my graduate school had recommended me for the job and one of the personnel
whom I accidentally met afterwards informed me that the work was highly appreciated and
praised at the senior level.
2004.8.11~13 Interpretation and translation for Bank of America on assessment of non performing loans
: Worked an average 10 hours daily for 3 days with 2 other interpreters at the business
conference room of Seoul InterContinental Hotel in Korea. Interpreted and translated for 3
foreign financial experts dispatched from Bank of America to assess NPLs in Korea. Required
a high level of concentration during the 3 days.
2003~2004 Translation of KBS news to be aired on Korean Air
: Summarized and subtitled into English the 9 o’clock news of the Korean Broadcasting
System (KBS), a major broadcasting channel in Korea, to be aired on Korean Air. Worked in
groups of two and once a week as a part time job while attending school.
2001~2004 Interpretation and translation for Seoul Central District Public Prosecutors’ Office
(awarded Certificate of Appreciation Dec. 12, 2001)
: Worked as a volunteer interpreter at the Seoul Public Prosecutors’ Office during my
undergraduate years. I was in charge of the communication during the investigation of
foreigners and the cases included murder, narcotics, counterfeit money, passport forgery and
assault. When necessary, I also worked at Public Prosecutors’ Offices in neighboring districts
as well as at courts.
