Student Teaching: Garfield High School, Akron, Ohio (Spring 2011)
• Taught general and honors English 11 classes in urban school with population of nearly 1,000; nearly
80 percent of the students were economically disadvantaged, and 70 percent were minority students.
• Designed original lesson plans, differentiated instruction for students on Individual Education
Programs, and provided supplemental tutoring opportunities for five English 11 classes containing
16-34 students, made myself available during lunch and planning periods.
• Collaborated with cooperating teacher and other English teachers in department to improve
classroom management methodologies and brainstorm student-centered creative and hands-on
lessons and activities.
• Within multi-cultural population, incorporated elements of choice into projects that enabled students
to work individually and in groups to personalize lessons and tie knowledge and skills into real-world
strengths and interests; students wrote, peer-edited and revised personal narratives, storyboarded
and presented novels, debated philosophical ideas included in literature; as a result, students
demonstrated more engagement, task-focused inquisitive behavior, and volunteered comments.
• Conducted action-based research study to measure how targeted teaching interventions impacted
students' performance; provided insight into effectiveness of value-added strategies; provided
quantifiable basis for reflective self-evaluation.
• Collaborated with parents, counselors, and administration to provide support for students and
troubleshoot problems through in-person meetings, phone calls, and parent-teacher conferences.
