The Soldier Family Advocate (SFA) Program consists of trained individuals
who ensure Soldiers/Family members have their medical complaints addressed
in a convenient and timely manner. The Program operates under a broad
concept and seeks to resolve issues. Address the Soldier/Family member
expectations that develop when the service expectation and actual
experience is not equivalent. Identifies opportunities for system
improvements and communicates data to facilitate improvements. Ensures
Soldier/Family member gaps are brought to the appropriate staff to trigger
assessment and appropriate resolution. SFA Role seeks to make the Military
Health System (MHS) more transparent to the Soldier and Family members.
Serve as an independent, neutral, and confidential advocate for the
Soldier/Family member. Interface with members of MHS multidisciplinary
team. The role involves assisting Soldiers and Family members through
challenging situations within the MHS. The role requires familiarity with
Army Medical Department systems. The systems are not limited but will
include documentation, MEB/PEB processes, and understanding of Veteran
Administration procedures. Coordinate with other installations & commands.
Detects and analyzes inefficiencies or problems in system actions and
requirements. Serve as source of ready information & institutional
knowledge to the Command Group and special staff.

Planning and leading or providing guide service for outdoor trips for
soldiers, their families, retirees and DOD Civilians. Trips had age ranges
from young children to adults. Trips included sea kayaking, hiking,
snowshoeing, whitewater rafting, teaching survival class, leading ski
trips, bungee jumping, sky diving, caving and city adventure trips. Trips
covered a variety of skill levels. Planning includes risk management, cost
analysis and preparation and upkeep of gear, as well as purchasing items
using a Government Credit Card. Customer service skills used to market
programs and trips, also general office skills such as filing, multi-line
phones, faxing, basic computer skills. Compose/prepare communications,
messages, letters, replies to inquires. Perform Quality Review/quality
control of information. Developed and launched successful Women's only
program, marketed and led several trips in this program; including several
overnight retreats at exclusive spa-hotels in WA. This job required me to
be the "face" of MWR, required lots of travel and driving customers to
sites in all weather conditions; this also required me to be personable and
have detailed knowledge of the area and flora/fauna of a trail or trip.
Instruction on safety aspects of each trip and skill set was also part of
the job. Lead over 130 trips of all varieties, assisted on 30 others.
