Volunteer/Extracurricular Activities:
In my sustainable building design, architectural drafting, construction management, materials science, building
science, as well as many other classes I have completed I have learned the emphasis and the extreme importance of
energy efficiency in buildings. I know every aspect, component, and system to make a building reach its most energy
efficient potential. I have had practice using a thermal imaging camera and I have conducted numerous blower door
tests as well as pressure tests on buildings. In my Photovoltaic class I learned every system component from sizing the
wire to wire-run length for designing and constructing a photovoltaic array in parallel and in series strings. I also
performed some actual job-field experience by constructing solar photovoltaic arrays on the rooftops of three buildings
around campus. We also set up the solar pathfinder instrument and utilized the software to perform solar site analysis.
In addition, in my Solar Thermal class I actually built and tested solar thermal systems. In my Wind & Hydro class I
got the rare opportunity of some hands-on experience with designing and constructing wind turbines on top of Beach
Mountain Through my Biofuels class at Appalachian State University I got the privilege of visiting a few Biogas
corporations. I got the chance to partake in the ASU biodiesel production. Appalachian State University actually has its
own Biofuels plant that produces biofuels for the bus system using sweet potatoes as its main product to produce the
fuel. I also got the opportunity to visit the Energy Exchange in Burnsville, NC. Here they have an immense landfill
where they sequester the waste to produce methane. In return, they use the methane to provide heat for their facility.
We also took a field trip to the Foothills Bio-Energies Plant and got the privilege of getting an in-depth tour of how
their facility is operated, the silo’s and machines they use, as well as their products. These learning experiences
included technical training and problem solving as well as building and putting up all these systems with their
components. I also have some Business Marketing/Administration classes on resume, prior to my Appropriate
Technology degree I was a Marketing/Administration major at Appalachian State University.
