Coaching Philosophy

My philosophy of coaching is really a simple one. I desire to treat all people I come in contact

with the same respect and integrity that I would expect to have shown to me.

My background as an athlete and coach have taught me to play to win, to be driven toward a set

of goals that allows me to “keep score” and continually evaluate myself in whatever I am doing. I

also realize that there are sets of rules, which must be followed. I play by the rules of the game

and demand the same from my players.

My background as an English teacher has taught me that there is no substitute for good

communication. My ability to express myself through the written and spoken word has served me

well.

I believe in being organized. I am a planner. I have the ability to anticipate trends and react to

them. My 22 years in this business has taught me to be proactive, not reactive.

Finally, my overall background has taught me to lead. I have been a “Coach of the Year”. I have

led great defenses; I have coached in “national championships”. I have

been a Health Underwriter President. I have been the top producer in several regions or

companies. Finally, I have been the leader of a family that has been together 40 plus years.

I seek an opportunity to take my philosophy into a situation that will allow me to

reach the goals I have set for myself. It is important to expect

professionalism and it is equally important to expect people to become

competent in their area of expertise. Loyalty is an attribute that is earned, but

can never be under-emphasized. It is one of the most important drivers in

building relationships.

My coaching background has taught me that there are three characteristics that

are a part of every successful team. These characteristics need to be worked

on and tracked on a daily basis. Following this blueprint makes any team successful.

Individual Tasks Each member of the team needs to be able to attack their day with a clear

understanding of what they need to accomplish in order to make the team successful. Many of these

tasks may be daily and routine; others may result in individual planning for a long-term result. An

outstanding coach need not micro-manage, but they must track the tasks of the individuals to insure

that the final outcome of the tasks result in team accomplishment. Individual tasks may differ in

responsibility according to the person. The coach works with each person to optimize the individual

performance.

Group Tasks - A part of any team is the accomplishment of group tasks. When each individual is

working on their tasks, they should be able to clearly visualize how they fit into a larger picture. How

does their work fit into what is to be accomplished? Each person working on their individual tasks

leads to the completion of group tasks. All are important contributors. Again, the effective coach is

aware of what the group is doing and has the ultimate responsibility of keeping the parts oiled.

Team Tasks Just as all of us are, at one time or another, involved in the sales process, all of us

are a part of a team. A coach is expected to produce a team that wins games, build character and

gives each player a sense of self-confidence and the feeling that it is good to belong to a team. This

is the final product of individual, group and team tasks. Ultimately, we want a winning team.

Successful coaches are generally recognized as good managers. Vince Lombardi was considered

an icon in business. Pat Riley and others speak to managers and sales people throughout the world.

The one thing they bring to the table is attention to detail organization. They have the ability to

recruit and retain good people. They also break their practice schedules into individual, group and

team segments. Doing this allows the team to play at an outstanding pace on game day.

Each task cannot be viewed as a snap shot. It is a moving picture. Goals are accomplished daily,

monthly and yearly. A person working on an individual task is actually working for the team and the

team goals. They are moving toward winning the game.

My education background is very conducive to leading and motivating people to obtain desired

results. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master’s in Education. I have taught

English successfully for eight years. This background allows me to exhibit leadership skills,

motivational skills and training skills that are superior to those who are not trained to instruct and

teach. Coupling my concentration of English and Secondary Administration with my

strong coaching background allows me to be equally at home in the academic

boardroom or the athletic field.
