Assistant Chief Financial Officer – Physician Practices (2009 – 2011)
Financial leadership for physician enterprise employing 78 physicians, 38 non-physician
practitioners and 158 practice staff in 55 practice locations, 33 distinct specialties, 4
primary care offices, 3 retail clinics and 3 provider based departments. Manages annual
net revenues and operating expenses of 184M and 133M, respectively. Supervision of 21
FTEs within physician coding, revenue, and billing.
• Developed and implemented documentation, coding and charge entry program for
all inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory professional services and procedures.
• Created physician practice reporting tools to analyze, plan, manage, and sustain
physician integration including statistical measures, productivity reports,
compensation analyses, financial projections and physician financial statements.
• Engaged practice managers and physicians in financial oversight of practice
operations.
• Provided compliance guidance for all physician services including; research and
interpretation of State and Federal regulations and Commercial contracts,
coordination of internal audits, impact analysis and communication with providers
and third party payors. Discovered and resolved non-compliant billing of locum
tenens services (+$150,000). Corrected inappropriate modifier usage (+$100,000
per year), discovered and resolved non-compliance with Medicare “incident to”
and “split shared visit” regulations.

Berkshire Health Systems, Pittsfield, MA
Associate Vice President (2007 – 2009)
Provided financial leadership for all Health System entities, including: Berkshire Medical
Center, a 306 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Massachusetts;
Fairview Hospital, a 25 bed critical access hospital; Berkshire Faculty Services, a 30
group physician practice organization employing over 100 physicians; and an
administrative management company. Managed annual net revenues and operating
expenses of 390M and 380M, respectively. Supervision of 28 FTEs within payor
contracting, reimbursement, business development, budgeting and general accounting.
• Identified, negotiated and recovered claims underpayments totaling 2.2M.
• Identified, researched and corrected billing inaccuracies (+600,000 per year).
• Identified, developed and implemented significant changes to improve
accountability, transparency, clarity and timeliness of the Health System’s
financial information.
