INTRODUCTION
I am a Quality Engineering Professional with extensive experience as an
avionics (embedded software) project development team member performing
quality activities. Proven experience managing engineers, projects, assets
and a metrology service supplier. I have also been successful as a process
improvement leader and team member.
This resume covers activities from 1990 to April 2011 at GE Aviation
(a.k.a. Fairchild Defense) Germantown, MD.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Quality Engineer
Program Quality Engineer (2007 to April 2011):
. Evaluated System Engineering products (plans, requirements, and
specifications).
. Managed customer needs as the site Hardware Quality point of contact.
. Secured customer acceptance of avionic subsystems and support products
for shipment.
. Participated in engineering milestone reviews throughout the
developmental lifecycles.
. Led and participated in root cause analysis events.
Software Quality Engineer (1990 to 1996 and again from 2000 to April 2011):
. Completed Software Quality Engineer (SQE) activities for all software
development lifecycle phases, providing comprehensive software
development coverage for our clients.
. Presented SQE activities and status to project management and
customers, keeping stakeholders informed.
. Reviewed proposals/contracts for quality requirements, estimated,
planned and scheduled the SQE effort.
. Coordinated with and supported internal/external customers, resulting
in good working relationships and customers comfortable and confident
that their interests were actively being served.
. Performed software work product evaluations (plans, specifications,
source code, test cases, reports, etc.), identifying and eliminating
defects early in the process (cost savings).
. Identified corrective actions, assessed and verified resolution
incorporation, preventing additional issues from being introduced into
the products or processes.
. Audited software processes (SEI CMM Level 3), standards and software
development plan commitments, ensuring software development
compliance.
. Traced requirements from system requirements through to software
qualification test documents, identifying gaps in a timely manner.
. Acted as software qualification test director ensuring that:
o tests were performed in accordance with the test documentation
o test results were accurately recorded and controlled
o detected anomalies were documented, evaluated, resolved, tested
and approved closure
. Collected, processed, analyzed and reported audit and defect density
metrics. Identified and discussed good and adverse trends and
preventive action measures with the project team.
. Evaluated and approved process and product changes (change control
board member).
. Participated in customer and government attended software design
reviews and configuration audits.
Internal Auditor (ISO9001/AS9100) (2005 to April 2011):
Conducted internal audits (ISO9001:2000, ISO14001 and AS9100B) and used the
results as inputs to the process improvement, corrective and preventive
action systems. Other assignments included:
. Audit Coordinator (ISO9001 and ISO14001) responsibilities included:
o Assigned audits, reviewed audit results, approved audit results,
and reported status
. Worked directly with the third party auditors (ISO9001 & AS9100B)
during their assessments (NSF-ISR, Ltd).
Supervisor - Software Test (IV&V) (1999 to 2003) and Software Quality
Engineers (2000 to 2003):
Managed and led a small group (4-7) of Software Test Engineers (STE) and
SQE Engineers.
. Designed job specifications, interviewed and evaluated candidates and
selected employees to hire.
. Evaluated employees' performance, provided performance feedback and
coaching that improved their efficiency and effectiveness. Developed
and presented SQE staff training (formal and informal).
. Prepared accurate project labor hour estimates for both the SQE and
STE functions.
. Created staff loading profiles and projections, providing input for
department resource planning.
. Provided supervision, assigned projects and provided technical
assistance as required.
Process Improvement (Full Time: 1996 to 1999 and Part Time: 2002 to April
2011):
I wrote new processes, created process maps and revised existing processes
for multiple groups (Software Engineering (SWE), Hardware Engineering (HWE)
and SQE). Evaluated new/revised processes (SWE, HWE, SQE and SCM) and
provided constructive feedback, increasing process effectiveness.
Process Goal: Develop a Software High/Low Level Design process.
. Participated in team meetings, approach discussions, process and
training material reviews.
. Created a SEI CMMI design requirements to the design process elements
correlation matrix.
Process Goal Achieved: Develop and implement a compliant Foreign Object
Debris/Damage (FOD) process.
. Developed compliant processes and the associated training material,
reducing FOD in delivered products.
Process Goal Achieved: Obtained an ISO9001:2004 registration.
. Developed revisions to engineering processes achieving compliance with
the standard.
. Designed and presented engineering process training, enabling the
staff to adhere to the standard.
. Consistently earned high audit compliance scores from our Third Party
ISO9001 auditor (NSF-ISR, Ltd).
Process Goal Achieved: Developed an effective Systems Requirements
Definition process.
. Managed and led the Lean Requirements Definition project, resulting in
a more efficient process.
. Contributed to the Lean targets and measures and critical success
factors teams.
Process Goal Achieved: Successfully assessed as a SEI CMM Software Process
Maturity Level 3 organization.
. Managed and led the software process improvement project
(schedule/budget/progress reporting) as the Software Engineering
Process Group (SEPG) chairman.
. Performed SEI CMM level 3 gap analysis surveys, analyzed results and
report findings indicating the processes to revise or create achieve a
Software Process Maturity Level 3 assessment.
. Developed and documented engineering processes and reviewed the
processes developed by teammates.
. Developed and documented SQE processes that successfully met the SQA
key process area requirements.
Software Configuration Management
Defined, documented and implemented a disciplined approach to performing
Software Configuration Management activities during all software
development phases. The SCM activities include estimating, planning,
evaluating, auditing, controlling, customer presentations and support.
Miscellaneous
I recently completed the CMMI for Development Version 1.3 class (Given at
the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute). I also participated
in Six Sigma training. I am an ASQ member. I have extensive experience
using several versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint,
Outlook, some Project and Access). I am familiar with Windchill (PDMlink &
Projectlink), TipQA, C language and Risk Management.
