Bachelor of Arts- History, Certificate of Social
Studies Education
Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 2001
During my undergraduate experience at Colorado State
University my major course work was in United States
History, focusing on early America and the creation of
the Constitution through the period of Reconstruction
and into the Age of Industrialization. Additionally I
took courses in Latin American and Chinese history to
broaden my historical background.
To earn the Certificate of Social Studies Education I
took courses in all social science subjects including,
psychology, economics, political science, geography,
sociology, and philosophy. Additionally I added World
Mythology and American Literature to my electives as
well as speech communications giving me a strong
liberal arts background to begin my teaching career.
Professional Teacher License
State of Colorado- Compliant with No Child Left Behind
for Social Studies Education
To maintain my licensure I attended trainings and
seminars for Social Studies teachers. Additionally, I
gained certification to teach AVID (Achievement Via
Individual Determination) a nationally recognized
college preparatory program for underrepresented
students. I became trained in SIOP (Sheltered
Instruction Observation Protocol) and was asked to
teach and develop curriculum for students who do not
speak English as their first language. Because of
successes I had in this program I was asked to share my
methods with other teachers in the district where I was
employed. I also participated in the Colorado
Education Association's Leadership Academy. In my
most recent position I was trained in Cognitive
Coaching, a technique that allows me to be an active
listener then pose meditative questions so a client can
come up with answers to questions on their own.
Key Qualifications
Response to Intervention Specialist for Mountain View
High School, a fully accredited Colorado Public High
School in the Thompson Valley School District.
Experience coordinating partners on a grant funded COPD
education campaign with the Centennial Area Health
Education Center (CAHEC).
6 years of classroom experience as a Certified
Secondary Social Studies Educator.
2 years of pre-school teaching in a non-profit
childcare center planning and delivering lessons and
activities for children ages 2 -5.

sectors.
Experienced communicator who wrote correspondence on
behalf of Colorado Governor Bill Ritter during my
internship with his Office of Policy Initiatives.
Experienced Public Health Advocate
Program coordinator for Breathing Easier on the Eastern
Plains (BEEP): A COPD Program. In this role I was
responsible for working with partner organizations to
develop educational messaging for communities and
physicians on the eastern plains of Colorado targeting
the lack of knowledge and correct diagnosis of COPD, as
well as prevention, treatment and self management of
this disease. Centennial Area Health Education Center
(CAHEC) was the leader of this grant funded initiative
but partnered with the American Lung Association, the
University of Colorado at Denver, the Academy of Family
Physicians, National Jewish Medical Center and the
Southeastern Colorado Area Health Education Center.
Experienced Curriculum Writer
As a teacher I created and taught new social studies
curriculum for second language learners as well as new
material for dropout prevention classes. This role
prepared me for public policy, as it was necessary to
communicate with faculty, parents and community
interests regarding student achievement in the Adams 50
School District
Experienced Leader
I served on the Board of Directors for Teaching Tree
Early Childhood Learning Center. They are a non-profit
childcare center whose mission is to provide quality
care and educational experiences to in an economically
and culturally diverse climate. My major
responsibilities on the BOD included participation in
the Special Events Committee and Curriculum Review and
Implementation, Budgeting and Recruitment and Retention
of quality staff.
For 15 months I served the Larimer County Community as
a member of the Pathways Past Poverty Initiative. The
Pathways groups are dedicated to finding sustainable
solutions for the community through grassroots efforts
and the use of sound research from similar communities
across the US. I participated on the Early Childhood
Education and Achievement branch, as well as Policy
Action branch of the Pathways Past Poverty initiative.
On the Westminster High School Building Leadership Team
I worked with teachers and administrators to develop
school-wide goals and a plan for implementation to
reach them. I collected feedback from departmental
members to take to building leadership meetings and
reported back to the social studies department with
team decisions. As a member of the Building Leadership
Team I served on the hiring committees for the new
principal selected for Westminster High in 2005, as
well as on the interviewing team for the new
Superintendent who joined District 50 in 2006. The
Building Leadership Team was also responsible for
presenting to the school board and parent groups in the
district.
The Westminster Education Association (WEA) is an
affiliate of the Colorado and National Education
Associations. A position I held with much esteem, I
worked to serve the teachers and support personnel in
Adams County School District 50 as a member of the
Board of Directors (BOD) for the WEA. The Association
strives "to promote high quality education for every
child while advocating for the interests of public
employees." The position was politically oriented, as
the BOD keeps members informed of all education related
policy action brewing at the capital. We helped with
local and statewide campaigns such as Referenda C and
D, Ritter for Governor, Representative Cherilynn
Penniston and 3A a bond initiative for School District
50. In 2007 I was asked to serve as the Vice President
of this association. I also served the educators and
support personnel as a member of the negotiations team
who worked successfully with the Adams County District
50 School Board and Superintendent to create a $40,000
starting salary for teachers in School District 50, the
first in Colorado to do so.
