hi!
i’m phillip gessert, a print designer. I’ve also
written plenty of copy especially for direct mail.
I’m passionate about personal feeling, and making real human connection.
Or the feeling of one through great design and writing.
My main design interest at the moment is careful typography, and
I’ve been tinkering quite a bit with social media.
On the side (I never much like including this in the resumé itself), I’m
a painter, an acoustic guitarist, a voracious reader, a zombie film
aficionado (though who isn’t these days). And I love to run!
But above all else, I consider myself a constant learner. We are never done
in this world! So each day is a chance to grow and transform.
I hope for a chance to do so with you. And I hope that my little note
here and the resumé on the next page both give you a good sense
of me as a person, and what it will be like to work with me.
I am happy to provide references, just give me a holler at
806-***-****. My portfolio is up at phillipgessert.com/design.
can’t wait to hear from you! p.
my name is
phillip gessert.
i’m a freelance graphic designer, and have been since March. I
love to make logos and design great stationery. I also design and write copy for direct
mail, outdoor boards and most any other sort of print. And then I pitch them.
So I’m primarily a print designer. But I’ve made my share of supporting
graphics for the web, too and my current fascination is social media!
And I’m a local board member for the American Advertising Federation.
i was a staff designer for graham data supplies here in
Amarillo. I found solid design solutions, much as I do now and used my
knowledge of different print processes to help ensure quality results.
There was a layoff in March, so my time there was a bit short but I
was able to build some great relationships just the same.
before that, I was the sole designer and illustrator for Data Print
for three years, until they closed up shop December 31, 2010.
Most of my duties were similar to what they are now, and were
with Graham Data I created market-appropriate graphics and copy,
meeting and pitching to clients, and handling ad strategy.
But I also preflighted files to make sure things printed right. Checked
up on trapping, screen angles and frequency. And checked jobs as they
came off the press to make sure they met my high standards!
Before I came onboard, Data Print hadn’t done four-color process work. So I helped
add to our repertoire designing and handling all documents that printed this way.
i was the print manager for the local officemax. This
means I oversaw staffing, training, and evaluation for all printing staff.
It also means I was in charge of driving sales, which I increased 30%
within two months of taking on the job. Beat plan by 40%, and led
sales in our district. We earned some extra staff as a result.
Then I started helping the District Manager on a multi-unit level, providing training
and support for other managers. I did this for about three years, until 2007.
i studied fine art at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County.
Got a President’s Fellows award and Certificate of Merit for my achievements.
i’m awesome with Adobe applications specifically InDesign, Illustrator
and Photoshop. And I’ve used all of these in Windows and on a Mac. I like the Mac.
