Projects/Experience

< 2010-11 Completed several consulting projects dealing with selection of

applications that "cloud based", resulting in very fast implementation,

very low IT and expense costs and large savings for each corporation.

< 2010 Performed a telecom cost reduction analysis, including upgrading to

cloud supplied VoIP calling and virtual telephone systems supplied by a

AT&T (savings expected to exceed $500K annually).

< 2011 - Conducted a system search to control expense costs for an

organization. This resulted in the selection of a solution that includes

a purchasing system, contract management, accounts payable approvals,

expense budgets, visual dashboards and travel & expense approvals. The

solution has an immediate payback of ten times the yearly expense with

additional paybacks in the following years. Since the solution is based

in the Internet cloud there is no capital costs for the project (IT

equipment, training or configuration is all included in the subscription

price.).

< 2009 - Created a copier 30 day rental program for Journal Sentinel this

represented lower cost (savings 50% - $300K per year), lower risk and

also reduction in taxes.

< IT Consolidation Study 2010 for Journal Communications (JC): Study was to

plan the merging of IT staffs between 3 companies owned by JC.

Consolidation consisted of standardization and elimination of redundant

capabilities (ROI up to 25% with minor investments in capital). The

project also produced a roadmap vision for JC applications in 5 years.

Created 8 technical planning teams to begin the standardization and

removal of redundant capabilities. Redirected capital plans for 2010

resulting in $110K in licensing and installation costs by sharing

resources between sites.

< Telecom Consolidation 2009/2010: Leveraging new technologies and power of

combined purchasing the team was able to lower the annual costs to

Journal Communications by over $400K. This was achieved by combining

Internet access, telephone and data line costs under one vendor. Sites

now use low cost Internet based telephone dialing plans. Local calls are

free, significant drop in long distance and international calling.

Replaced smaller business office telephone systems with virtual phone

systems. All the features of a phone system without the system on

premise.

< IT Off-Shore Outsourcing 2008/2009: Performed a full study on outsourcing

the majority of IT staffing for Journal Sentinel Inc. The results

including outsourcing to 5 off-shore corporations each specializing in a

different technology discipline (database, infrastructure, helpdesk,

COBOL programming, interface programming, hardware repair and support of

the Financial system support. The primary goals were to reduce costs to

the corporation while maintaining the same level of support and response

to the business. Many computer systems received improved service to the

business clients with fewer problems occurring on a daily basis. The

corporation saved 30% of payroll and benefit costs ($1M) for the IT

department. The planning retained all key IT knowledge brokers to

protect the business.

Projects/Experience (continued)

< New Production Manufacturing Facility 2000-2004: The project was budgeted

at $113M for a facility that included warehouse operations, robotic roll

delivery (Jervis/Webb), computer driven presses(ABB&KBA), intelligent

packaging and inserting of product(GMA), automated product

carting(Cannon) for distribution. This required 7x24 technology

availability, a new state-of-the-art data center and disaster recovery

planning. This facility featured the first full VoIP (Cisco) telephone

system installation in Wisconsin. The project resulted in positive

economic impact, improving the top line and cost structure by more than

$7 million. Project came within three percent of the original capital

request and was on time with no major problems after "go-live".

< Implementation of ERP solution (PeopleSoft) for Journal Communications to

standardize back office accounting.

< Participated in strategic planning for the corporation for the last 14

years including presentations and demonstrations.

< Implemented IT audited controls for Sarbanes-Oxley, Payment Card Industry

(PCI) and Information privacy with no material deficiencies reported by

audit. Controls included redesign of several major systems.

< 2000 - Recommended to executive management that technology platforms

needed to be standardized to control IT costs. At the time, IT managed

eight different technology platforms (Windows, Novell, DEC AXP, DEC VAX,

Tandem, Sun Solaris, Linux and SCO Unix). This resulted in a 3 year

project starting in 2001 to standardize to Windows and Sun Solaris. The

project resulted in a reduction of IT costs and staffing by 20% and also

reduced major system issues from 20 to 4 monthly.

< Numerous Application Development projects including:

o Operational consolidations; merged several remote prepress operations

into a centralized operation resulting in fewer FTEs in prepress.

Consolidated financials into one corporate financial group. Consolidate

printing into the West Milwaukee production facility resulting in less

remote printing costs.

o Revenue opportunities: Many different marketing initiatives for both

Circulation subscriptions and Advertising. These would involve product

mixes for sales events, special invoicing, coupons and other like

activities. First newspaper industry ecommerce web site for taking

newspaper subscriptions (2001).

o Shared Operation Revenue: Performed newspaper delivery sharing with many

different distribution companies and used Journal Sentinel distribution

services for other product delivery. These were situations where

customer delivery lists were shared between companies on a very timely

basis. This results in lower costs for both Journal Sentinel and the

other product vendors.

o Financials (time collection, payroll (Ceridian), Accounts Payable

(PeopleSoft), Accounts Receivable (Mactive & DISCUS), Product

Distribution and Customer Service. Electronic workflows for tracking

differential payroll rates in various departments (Kronos and Microsoft

Workflow).

< 2008 - VoIP telephone system implementation for telephone service center.

This included intelligent call routing based upon telephone agent

capabilities, call service metrics, call waiting time indicator, call

back options and telemarketing services. This resulted in the

replacement of costly telemarketing phone system and the better use of

agents in the call center (reduction of 3 FTEs). Also installed

automated interactive voice response system (IVR) that reduced telephone

agents by 5. This system automates caller transactions with voice

activated business transactions.

< Company Intranet portal using Microsoft SharePoint technologies. This

included individual sites for each department, company services (phone

book) and electronic WorkFlow.

< Heavy contract and negotiation experience dealing with technology

services, vendors, project delivery, regulatory compliance, Sarbanes

Oxley, PCI - Credit Card Compliance, customer information privacy

information, audits and service level agreements.

< Risk analysis for a corporation dealing with processes and procedures

with technology.

< Project management and project priority planning with over 95% of

projects delivered on-time and below budget.

< Cloud Computing Outsourcing 2009: Several projects providing technology

solutions for the business where the solution is hosted and maintained

off-site by a 3rd party vendor. Editorial news story archiving and

archive library was outsourced to the creator of the software.

Negotiations resulted in a cost which was lower than the original

software maintenance costs. This project reduced internal storage costs,

future IT upgrade costs and application support costs (one FTE in IT was

reduced). Placing of advertising for the newspaper by external customers

using the Internet/web (Reduction of 1 FTE in ad makeup with this

project). Moving of manual operations for tearsheets, proofing and
