QUALIFICATIONS -
• Line or wire and rigging used to secure the ship to a pier, mooring, or anchor
• Able to identify functions of navigation and shipboard equipment
• Lowered, raised and launched lifesaving equipment
• Handled small boats
• Navigates by using several different types of compasses
• Keeps records by degrees or points
• Navigational aids
• Nautical rules of the road and the buoys of inland waters of the US
• Knows the nomenclature of decks, superstructures and parts of the hull
• Knows the purpose and limitations of first aid and the first aid treatment for electrical shock, simple and compound fractures, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and burns.
• Knows how to determine the classes of fire hoses and how to use carbon dioxide, dry chemical and water portable fire extinguishers
• Knows the function of the typical fire main system, fixed carbon dioxide system, progressive flooding and the danger involved.
• Broke out, rigged, and stowed cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear.
• Chipped and cleaned rust spots on decks, superstructures, and sides of ships, using wire brushes and hand or air chipping machines.
• Cleaned and polished wood trim, brass, and other metal parts.
• Examined machinery to verify specified pressures and lubricant flows.
• Handled lines to moor vessels to wharfs, to tie up vessels to other vessels, or to rig towing lines.
• Lubricated machinery, equipment, and engine parts such as gears, shafts, and bearings.
• Maintained ship's engines under the direction of the ship's engineering officers.
• Measured depth of water in shallow or unfamiliar waters, using leadlines, and telephoned or shouted depth information to vessel bridges.
• Operated, maintained, and repaired ship equipment such as winches, cranes, derricks, and weapons system.

SUPERVISORY SKILLS:
• Supervised up to 25 seamen at a time on: Fueling operations, cargo operations, helicopter landing and takeoff, painting and preservation, hazardous materials handling and disposal.
• Over saw ships crew in all capacities including setting speed and course, using a compass, navigational aids, steering maneuvers, towing and being towed, radio communications, lifeboat maintenance, survival equipment, small craft launch and recovery.
• Supervised crews of up to 15 in firefighting and damage control exercises.
