TITLE: EFFICACY OF GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAM TO IMPROVE FUNCTIONAL
HEALTH STATUS IN OLDER POPULATION WITH ARTHRITIS.
SPECIALIZATION: Orthopedics and Geriatric Rehabilitation
DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a group exercise intervention
on the health status of older members with arthritis and to promote independence by reducing
the impact of disability using exercises techniques and by optimizing the environment The
important goal was to develop an intervention that would be safe or older individuals who are
likely to have chronic co morbidities. The narrow pharmacological approach doesn’t address
the more global activity related decline in physical function and health status that can
compromise functional independence.
The exercise program was found to be enjoyable and safe for a heterogeneous group of
medically stable older individuals with arthritis and other co- morbidities. The results are
consistent with research showing intensity exercise is effective in improving physical function
in older individuals.
