Projects

Reduction in Downgrading Due to Mould Level Fluctuation: This was a Six Sigma

green belt project initiated by electrical maintenance section of the department

to reduce the number of slabs downgraded due to mould level fluctuation during

slab casting.

Artificial Neural Network based crack detection system: The project was taken up

by Tata Steel along with National metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. The

purpose of this project was to predict the crack in the slab during continuous

casting and on the real time take decision on the process parameters to reduce the

cracking.

Mould Powder Development for High Speed Casting of Peritectic Grades: The purpose

of this project was to develop a continuous casting mould powder for increasing

the continuous casting speed (throughput) of the peritectic steel grade slabs.

Mould Level Fluctuation Tracker: The tracker was developed to track the exact

reason for the downgrading by stratification of exhaustive list of parameters.

Reduction of Groove Mark in Continuous Cast Slabs: This was a Six Sigma green belt

project initiated by mechanical section of the department to reduce the number of

slabs downgraded due to generation of groove mark during continuous casting.

Improvement in Strike Rate of Automotive Skin Panel Grade Steel: Skin panel grade

steel is very prone to sliver defect revealed in the downstream rolling process.

This project was initiated to improve the yield of this grade at casting stage

without compromising on the quality in the downstream processes.

Electronic Log Book for Slab Caster: The online system was developed to monitor

the various grades which cast in the CCM in the shop in heat by heat basis. This

gives the visibility of all the grades which is cast as well the details of the

ongoing casting. The slab by slab information is also included in phase II of the

project. Other summary information like slab downgrading details, Heat downgrading

details, Strike rate of critical grades are also included in the system.

Reduction in Transverse cracking problem in Aluminum killed microalloyed grade

steel: Reason for cracking was identified and corrective action taken.

Model Development for the fitment of Downgrade heats in grade having closer

chemistry: This system was developed in the level-2 system. It helps the QA

personnel to take online help from the system and fit the off heat as soon as

possible without increasing the inventory in the shop.

Machine Health Monitoring System: This system is used to predict the slab casting

machine health. It predicts the exact location of the rolls in the slab caster

machine which is out of order and helps the maintenance team to take action in the

appropriate segment.

Heat Casting Graph Modification: Modification in casting graph of heat cast of

Continuous Casting Machine to incorporate time of SLAB cutting, thus making ease

in slab decision and reducing time output graph finalization time by 5 minutes per

heat and saves lot of time of engineers.

Automation of Quality Reports:

Automation of Manual Excel Reporting: Excel report of daily performance was made

and circulated in the daily production meeting. This report is made LEVEL 3 based

SMTP reporting on LOTUS NOTES MAILING system to the concerned personnel.

Automated SMS of quality report: This report was developed in level-3 system and

SMS triggers every morning to the mobile phone of the concerned personnel.

|

B. Tech Project in IIT Roorkee.(2006-07): Micro-texture Determination of Abnormal

Grain Growth in AL-Li 8090 alloy after Static Annealing. Micro texture study was

done using Electron Back Scatter Diffraction method and severe plastic deformation

at the edges was established by Finite Element Method analysis and Micro hardness

analysis.

Two Months Internship in Tata Steel Ltd. (May 2006 to Jun 2006): Study of Sliver

Problem in Cold rolled automotive Interstitial Free Steel due to Steel making and

slab casting. & Sulphur Print samples analysis to find the effect of various

casting parameters on the internal soundness of the cast steel.

One Month Internship in NML Jamshedpur (May 2005): Iron Control in Metal

Extraction (Solvent Extraction Method): This project includes the extraction of

various valuable metals from the leach liquor produced from the gangue of South

African mines.
