A brief rundown on
the Lilly’s of my life...
A t the age of eighteen, in 1984, I was offered a Commercial Artist Traineeship with
Australian Provincial Newspaper Company, after doing my senior module of Work Experience
in their advertising department. From there I was qualified as a Pre-press Level 8 Compositor
and an Commercial Illustrator. Those days of drawing diamonds with a .025 Rotring pen, to look real for the
local jeweller I sometimes miss...
I was trained under the Compositors Apprenticeship Act, supported by the Printer’s and Kindreds Union
(R.I.P.); under the ever watchful eagle eye and mentorship of Mrs Cecily Schuman, a very skilled
visual and commercial artist at the time. I cannot imagine my life’s professional path without her training
and expertise. In those days everything was done by hand. I was nicknamed the ‘surgeon’ as my skills with
the scalpel developed, so did my retrographic camera skills, all letters surgically removed from their outlines
for four colour reproduction... fun and very hard yakka!
S H
ince then, my natural journey in all things and drawn graphics and logos, annual
media, have taken me far and wide, both in reports, pharmacy magazines, all mining public
experience and ever learning... relations strategies and industry promotion.
I have worked in all facets of both high quality Editing, managing advertising, and one on one
pre-press preparation, to the more demanding contact with clients all part of experience I have
daily newspaper and magazine deadline gained over the last 30 odd years.

The development and evolution from the “Capricornia
Credit Union” to “the Capricornian” was a long and very
satisfying chapter of my career. Two years in the complete
concept, another two before it had come to fruition.
Much market research was complied over this time, and
many many logo designs, colour combinations,
and corporate identity exploration... the finished product...
