I was born in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky to a family of generations of coal miners. I,

myself am a lifelong coal miner. My first job was at age sixteen in an underground coal mine in

Pike County, KY. While working in the mine on the evening shift and attending high school

during the day, I became the first of thirteen children to graduate.
