BANK OF SHARJAH – Dubai/Sharjah, United Arab Emirates 2009 to
2012
(Corporate Bank with $5 billion+ in Assets Under Management and $1bln in non corporate Investments)
SENIOR INVESTMENT ANALYST (2012)
INVESTMENT ANALYST (2010 to 2012)
PROJECT CONSULTANT / BUSINESS PLANNING (2009 to 2010)
Charged with all analysis required for the Bank’s potential new investments which include (but are not limited to) listed equities
in the UAE, Middle East, Europe & the USA, private equities in the MENA region and Europe, MENA government and
corporate bonds (vanilla and convertible), and real estate investments.
In addition to new investments, I was charged with ongoing analysis for all current investments within the $1bl portfolio as well
as evaluated exit strategies for problematic real estate investments.
Another significant role was taking part in the managing of the Bank’s largest individual investment: the acquisition of Emirates
Lebanon Bank (BNP Pariba’s Bank in Lebanon). I was tasked with assessing the risks involving corporate financing requests of
over $3M coming from the subsidiary; in addition, I dealt with creating, structuring, and updating all strategic concepts for
ELBank including general strategy and branding, asset allocation, budgeting, internal structuring, and financial projections until
2016 including stress tests. The financial projections were essential in evaluating the current year versus budget and used as a
going forward tool for global strategy based on asset allocation shifts, profitability scenarios, loan portfolio structures, sovereign,
corporate and interbank rates assumptions, and political outlooks. Managing asset allocation based on liquidity needs over term
periods, currency needs (dollar vs. Lebanese pound), profitability targets consistent with budget and risk tolerance derived from
yields, political stability and economic stability were additional topics that needed to be managed. The above tasks were
paralleled with regular industry research comparing ELB to its peers in order to refine strategy and improve asset management of
the subsidiary.
Majority of ELBank related duties conducted in French and Arabic.
Following proven success during my first role as a business consultant for the Islamic Stock exchange and later as an investment
analyst for the Bank’s portfolio, I was requested by the risk department to restructure the counterparty risk rating system for the
corporate portfolio. The new quantitative structure was essentially based on the concept that exposure to one counterparty can
and should have multiple risk ratings, leading to different provisioning requirements for the Bank’s profitability, and thus a
different net profitability figure, while still improving the assessment process for asset quality evaluation.
Finally, upon successful completion of the risk rating project, the head of internal audit and compliance tasked me to be in charge
of producing all Central Bank and Basel II compliance reports which include (but are not limited to) Quarterly Pillar I, yearly
ICAAP, Pillar II & III, and Board/Committee risk reports. Tasks in coordination with the head of financial compliance included
regular stress testing on the Bank’s books, extensive accounting adjustments and analysis, and dealing with the Bank’s disclosure
requirements being a listed company.
Key Achievements:
Contributed to net profit improvement of 50% for ELBank by improving asset allocation and resisting downward
pressure on corporate loan rates while managing risks.
Reduced costs of funds of ELBank by consistently reviewing deposit and loan rates as well as costs and potential reduction
options.
Successfully completed a leveraged buyout transaction of $100M+ from both the equity and debt sides of the deal.
Improved problematic assets essentially regarding real estate investments valuation renegotiation.
Completed business plan for new venture of a start up subsidiary bank in Paris including overall strategy, asset
allocation, profitability sources, balance sheet, structure cash flow projections, foreign currency requirements, loan and asset
term structure, interbank placements, head office support, deposit sources, HR structure, staff compensation, operational
costs, rate analysis and French regulations to determine break even for year three and asset size of approximately $500M.
Project was conducted and pitched to the Central Bank of France (task conducted in French).
Created the business plan for new venture of a start up JV: The Islamic Stock Exchange, an intensely confidential
project requiring seven months to complete.
Served as quantitative expert for the restructuring of entire risk rating system by using the new structure to increase
assessment accuracy, and to fairly reduce provisioning requirements and directly improve the net profit figure; fully
functional as of January, 2012.
Managed numerous risk management and financial control activities including developing risk reports for Board
Committees, Quarterly Pillar 1 sheets (credit risk, market risk, operational risk) and creating both annual ICAAP and Pillar
II reports (concentration risk, liquidity risk, interest rate risk, stress testing
