Thesis Topic: “The Effect of Medicare on Physician Wages”
Read published research papers to assess the state of research in the field of health economics connected to
insurance and physicians.
Found data from government databases online and in print applicable to my thesis. Utilized Excel for data
entry and transferred the data from Excel to STATA to complete the statistical analysis. Adapted the methodology from
a published paper to complete the analysis of the physician wage data.
Examined descriptive statistics to find issues in the data and corrected any problems.
Ran multiple regressions adding complexity gradually to know what effects any changes had on the model.
Through trial and error arrived at the best series of regressions which were turned into tables and described in writing.

Assisted faculty with current research and teaching duties| Took excel files for hospitals in the USA from 1948
to 1978 and imported the first two years into SAS. Assigned id numbers to all the hospitals in 1948 and used a merge
procedure to determine how similar the data were in 1948 to 1949. I examined the merged dataset to determine
common discrepancies. I wrote code in SAS to correct common issues such as removing spaces and the “The” from
the front of the hospital name. I compared other variables such as city, state, and number of beds to double check for a
match. I went through by hand looking for what was missed (around 20 percent). Finally assigned any new hospitals
an ID number and continued the same process adding 1950 to 1948 and 1959.
