Assistant Actuary, State Mutual Life Insurance Company, Worcester,
Massachusetts,
1990-1992. Responsibilities included universal life and variable
universal life pricing & product development, managing actuarial students,
coordinating and communicating with legal, marketing, computer, and
underwriting departments. Completed a life insurance pricing assumption
overhaul and established a system to keep them current. Also developed a
Professional Development Program for actuarial students.
Actuarial Assistant to Actuarial Associate, Nationwide Life Insurance
Company, Columbus, Ohio, 1983-1987 full-time; 1988-1990 part-time.
Universal life pricing & product development, including working with state
insurance departments, & company marketing, underwriting and computer
departments. Repriced term life, performed cash-flow modeling, managed
actuarial students, some financial reporting.
Actuarial Intern, Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, Worcester,
Massachusetts, college summers and breaks. Medicare Supplement rate
filings, disability income long-term reserve analysis, term life pricing,
special projects for chief actuary.
Actuarial Teaching Experience
Ball State University, Assistant Professor of Actuarial Science, Lecturer
in Mathematics, 2002-2007. Taught theory of interest; exam preparation
for statistics, investments, and interest; calculus; trigonometry; pre-
calculus; and practical math. Developed course in the theory of interest
for non-actuaries. Developed insurance mathematics unit for non-major
math students.
Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai, China, Visiting
Professor, 1995-1996-taught Theory of Interest and Actuarial Exam
Preparation to the very first Chinese actuarial class. Five of my
students won Exam 100 Prizes, and all but one passed the Theory of
Interest Exam.
Society of Actuaries Education and Examination Committee
Served 1988-1991, 2004-2011: Developed, wrote, and assembled literature
and activities for the FSA Tax and Regulation Module for Life/Annuity
track, including the 2-year update. Graded ASA Final Assessment in French
and English. Prepared and double-checked questions for Advanced Life
Insurance Pricing exam. Graded FSA exams. Served on committee which
developed the original Fellowship Admission Course.
Language Skills
Excellent written & spoken English, fluent in French (DELF B2
certification), functional in Japanese (Level 3 certification).
Personal
Recently relocated to western New York. Lived in Japan, China, France,
