Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my interest in the advertised position of Human Resource Assistant. I recently completed an MSc in
Organizational Psychology and am seeking a challenging position within the area of Human Resources, Administrative Support or
Organizational Development. I am enclosing my resume and would appreciate your consideration for my candidacy.
I am currently working in a temporary position as Administrative Assistant with a contracting company in New York. As it is a
temporary post I am currently seeking a more permanent post. My objective is to obtain a position with a HR function that will allow
for further professional growth and development.
From January of this year I completed an internship with UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) in New York as a HR
Support Officer and continued this experience as a consultant until June of this year. My internship with UNOPS was focused on
work related to the Mine Action Clusters human resources activities specifically the planning and reassignment exercise. My role
involved assisting in the recruitment process of staff under the mine action portfolio which included tasks such as generation of long-
lists/short-lists, coordination of interviews, managing the interview process and communicating with international staff. My role here
required a great deal of flexibility and adaptability to manage multiple responsibilities and projects with competing priorities and
deadlines.
From both my recent internship and other relevant work experience in administration and sales roles I feel that I have developed a
strong ability to manage work schedules, multi-task and to work in collaboration with others in a variety of work environments. I
recently graduated with an MSc in Organizational Psychology and although only at the beginning of my career I am highly
motivated and am seeking an opportunity to develop my existing skills in a professional and challenging environment. I feel that I
possess valuable skills that I can put into practice. I am a fast learner and I am determined to work hard to do so.
Through my academic background I have gained considerable skills in research and have experience of report writing, data
collection and analysis and I have gained a strong foundational knowledge of a range of human resource and administrative
functions. I have acquired specific skills and qualifications which I consider would be of value to you and your team.
I believe myself to have excellent communication skills and through my academic work and recent work experience have trained
myself to meet deadlines, take an adaptable approach to work and to work under pressure. I have experience in report writing, and in
presenting information to audiences both of which require me to demonstrate strong attention to detail. I believe these skills could be
considered an asset for working within a human resource or administrative role. I am proficient with use of Microsoft Office
packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet Explorer).
I feel that I am a team player but also possess the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. I feel confident that
my personal experience, skills and attitude toward my work would contribute to your organization.
I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and discuss any available employment opportunities within your organization or
to provide you with any further details required. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Elaine McGrath
