Professional Experience:

Research Assistant: August '10 - present

Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia

Major Project: Whole genome profiling to detect Schizophrenia methylation

markers

. Analysis of genome-wide biological datasets using next-generation

sequencing (ABI SOLiD Bioscope platform) of genomes and methylomes

(1575 human samples). The pipeline includes alignment of sequenced

reads against the reference genome, applying quality control

techniques, calculating CpG coverage estimates and bioinformatics

genome annotation and to determine the potential disease biomarkers

based on the methylation status of the CpG sites covered across the

samples.

Software: ABI SOLiD Bioscope, Bowtie

Programming: Perl, BASH, UNIX commands, parallel computing

Bioinformatics Intern: May-July'10

Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia

. Analyzed sequencing data of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus

aureus [MRSA] to investigate about the adaptive changes that it will

undergo to get homogeneous resistance.

. Handled large datasets such as genomic, proteomics data and

microarrays data on Tmev, Ramhorn Array Database (RAD)

Software/Databases: VectorNTI (Invitrogen), TMeV, RAD

Graduate Research Assistant: June'09-May'10

The University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, Texas

. Computationally studied the sequences from protein spots obtained

through LC/MS

. Analyzed the proteins for Calcium binding domains using various tools

and databases (NCBI, InterProScan, SMART, and Swiss Prot) and

continued with phylogenetic studies of the proteins. Predicted the

proteins with the domains based on the results obtained.

. Made an attempt to prove the results obtained using cloning and

expression protocols.

Graduate Research Assistant: Aug'08 - May'09

The University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, Texas

. Gathered information about distinguishing features, molecular markers,

and diagnostic techniques for lung and breast cancers.

. Studied various algorithms to improvise the quality of cancer images.

Academic Courses

Bioinformatics: Introduction to Bioinformatics I (Perl), Introduction to

Bioinformatics II (Perl)

Statistics: Special Topics (Independent Study) in Biostatistics, Post

Genomic Analysis (Minitab, R).

Computer Science: Intro to Computer Science (Java), Elementary Data

Structures/Algorithms in Java, Data Structures in Java, Database Management

(PHP, MySQL, Oracle, HTML, JAVASCRIPT), Parallel and Concurrent Programming

(C, C++, MPI)

Projects/Seminars:

1) Multiple Sequence Alignment of genomic sequences on multiple

processors Spring 2010

Wrote a C++ program using MPI to divide the given multiple sequences

into small parts at the root processor, sent them to the other processors

where they were aligned at the last row of the processors, induction of

gaps into the sequences to get good alignment, refined the alignment and

send it to the root processor, joined all the individual parts to get the

final best multiple sequence alignment.

2) CS 4342 (Database Management)

Fall 2009

. Created a database on 'Export, Return or Drawback of merchandise' (CBP

form -7553)

. Technical Environment: HTML, PHP, JavaScript MySQL

3) Active participant in NMBIS Symposium 2009 and 2010 conducted by

National Center for Genomic Resources, Santa Fe, NM.

4) Participated in "Entrepreneurship Awareness camp in Biotechnology"

conducted by ICRISAT and "Biologiks" the lecture workshop in Modern biology

organized by Indian Academy of Sciences, India.

Awards/Activities:

. Presented a research poster at Santa Fe in NM-IMBRE Bioinformatics and

Sequencing Core at NCGR 2010.

. Presented a research poster in 'American Society for Microbiology Rio

Grande Branch 2010 Annual Meeting'.

. Selected for "Best Research Content Poster Award"for Annual Poster

Sessions 2009, Bioinformatics Program, UTEP

. Acted as Vice-President for association of Bioinformatics students, UTEP.

. Organized 'International Food Festival', Colloquiums and poster

presentations at UTEP.

. Received "Participation Award" for Cancer research work with Dr.Wei Qian,

UTEP.
