Global health standard setting organization, with industry and healthcare
impacts in 140 countries.
Director, Communications and Design
Created the Communications and Design department with a staff of 12
professionals. Department serves as an internal advertising agency,
supporting all global mission requirements of the organization's Executive,
Business/Operations, and Science Divisions. Direct and manage marketing
communications needs of $100M in revenue support and a departmental budget
of $3.3M within a 1.3% positive variance. Provide strategic input to the
executive management team for the effective communication of USP's mission,
vision, products/programs, and results worldwide, with communication
emphasis in U.S., China, India, Brazil, and Switzerland. Held increasingly
responsible positions since joining USP in 1986.
Key Responsibilities and Results:
. Created Department organizational structure with internal processes
designed to create strong teamwork focused working environment and to
optimize cost effective project execution and delivery. Processes
resulted in efficiencies that yielded nearly 1700 products produced in
CY13.
. Lead for communication on 4 website launches resulting in 300% increase
in web traffic on Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese sites, and over 200%
growth on main site, website receives approximately 3 million visits a
year.
. Directed the development of branding and marketing communications for
over 20 product launches using global advertising, promotions,
exhibits, social media, collateral (brochures, flyers, and other
printed materials), and website (including overall web site content,
content architecture, development of dynamic content), in support of
all USP mission requirements most notably; The United States
Pharmacopeia and National Formulary, Food Chemical Codex launch,
Education Program, Verification program launch, and public
communications for the New USP Logo launch, Compounding, and
Prescription Container Labeling special campaigns.
. Ensure consistent brand image is maintained across all communications
through collaboration with technical staff members and management of
partnering organizations and subcontractors. Art Directing photo
shoots to ensure proper brand imagery.
. Translate business objectives into creative strategies ensuring all
communications match organizational needs and strategic goals.
. Manage expectations on projects and present creative solutions to
effectively communicate with the general public, manufactures and
technical subject matter experts, professional societies/associations,
and USP Members and employees.
. Developed an internal toolkit to support organizational requirements
and internal staff including an electronic library of templates,
presentations and logo style guides among others.
. Responsible for raising consumer/public awareness for the launch of
the USP Dietary Supplement Verification program on a shoestring budget
of $250k. Used three phase communication approach focused on building
USP recognition, increasing importance of USP dietary supplement mark,
and increase consumer demand to purchase USP marked products. Raised
awareness from 0% to 21% within 21/2 years of launch. Worked with
program participants on messaging and communication plans to continue
to build awareness.
