Teacher at Cabrillo Unified School District
2009 - 2010 (1 year)
I taught in an intensive diverse special education program. Most students were language delayed and English
was not the native language spoken at home. I taught to the individual educational plans that were created for
them. Several of our students had severe behavioral issues. I attended ABA training with a certified analyst
throughout the school year. I implemented what I learned in these trainings. In addition, several of my
students had Autism. I worked with a multidisciplinary team to address the needs of my students. We had
Speech Language Pathologists, School Psychologists, and Occupational therapists in our class daily.
I attended all IEP meetings and provided documentation of working on the students’ IEPS.
*Laid off due to restructuring of program*
Head First Grade Teacher at American Renaissance Academy
September 2008 - June 2009 (10 months)
This school was in its’ infancy when I worked there. I led the project development of the scope and sequence
of the first grade curriculum to meet a wide range of learners. I instructed on a one-to-one basis as well as
small group and whole class instruction. I created units that were focused on concepts while be aligned to
state standards. My lessons spanned the curricula subjects and were differentiated to make sure that every
student was in their zone of proximal learning. In addition, I attended weekly faculty meetings, and helped
with ongoing fundraising efforts for the school as well as recruitment.
*Moved due to personal reasons*
4/5 ELA SS Teacher at Department of Education Hawaii

district methodologies of teaching both English and Social Studies curriculum. I worked with my colleagues,
and students to create a rich learning environment.

Unit By Design Concept Adaptations
April 2007 to June 2007
Members:Lasya Silberman
Rationale
Adaptations have played an important part in the role of evolution; every organism has the potential to
develop the characteristics that allow them to survive and reproduce thus carrying forth the chain of life. It is
important for students to grasp the wide range of relationships among living things and between living things
and their environments. Becoming aware of these relationships allows for students to recognize the
adaptations that occur from the thick fur of a polar pear to the far-reaching tongue of an anteater.
The concept of adaptations as it relates to the topic of mammals fits well into this schema of thought and
is appropriate for the fourth grade. Their intelligence is now both symbolic and logical. My students have
acquired ‘operations’ which is a set of general rules and strategies and with this set is their ability to realize
‘reversibility’ that both physical and mental processes can be reversed and cancelled out by others.
With this greater understanding they are able to grasp the concept of classification. This ability is critical
in order to comprehend how mammals are classified and to be able to see the adaptations that are mirrored
within in this set of scientific data.
Thinking beyond the topic of mammals the concept of adaptations explores diversity issues which can safely
explored through divergent questioning using the framework of mammals, after all human beings are
mammals. In being able to understand how adaptations of species are effected by the habitat in which we live
we can further open our mind to be able to explore how adaptations can occur even after birth.
This unit reflects my educational philosophy . This unit was designed by crafting engaging lessons that
had clear objectives and were aligned to state and district standards. In light if this, I believe that my students
received a high quality of education that was rich with enduring understandings.
