WORK EXPERIENCE

Camp Counselor at Lake Forest Open Lands, Lake Forest, IL: June 2013-August 2013

I taught children entering K4, K5, 3rd, and 4th grade about nature through science and exploration.

We explored different ecosystems and I taught them native flora and fauna, ecological relationships,

and the history and geology of the landscape. I guided the children in team building activities daily.

I also led them in outdoor activities including hiking, biking, canoeing, swimming, camping, and

outdoor skills.

Land Management Internship at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Milwaukee, WI: January

2013-May 2013

I worked with a group of volunteers throughout my internship. We removed buckthorn and applied

herbicide in forestry mowed areas of the property. I assisted in garlic mustard management by

torching first year seedlings. I also helped plant over 200 white cedar trees on the lake shore to

restore the area to its original state before agricultural practices. To help in the management of the

predominately ash forest, I created a forest nursery. The seedlings will be planted as a later phase in

the management plan to restore the forest to a mixed forest.

Ecology Internship at UW-Parkside Supervised by Dr. David Rogers: May 2012-August 2012

During this internship, I worked on five independent projects.

1. I collected data at 94 treated patches of Typha (cattail) that have invaded the Chiwaukee

Prairie in Kenosha, WI and Spring Bluff Nature Preserve in Winthrop Harbor, IL. The sites

had been treated with herbicide to kill the cattails because it is outcompeting the prairie

species. The hope is there will be succession of annual and perennial forbs, grasses, and

sedges in the open patches. I recorded the number of cattails that had returned to these sites.

I also estimated the percent coverage of cattails, forbs, grasses, and sedges along a bearing

transect at each site. I entered all the data into a spreadsheet on Excel.

2. Developing an inventory of the trees on campus. My work involved gathering data of 774

trees in the lawn space on campus. This included logging the location using the Oshtec GPS

unit, identifying the species, and measuring the circumference of the trees.

3. Monitoring changes in the land cover of tree stands at 82 locations around Wisconsin. I

collected aerial photos from 1937 at each location to be compared to photos from the

present. I used the Wisconsin Historical Aerial Image Finder website.

4. Establishing and maintaining 33 native prairie beds on campus. All of the plants will be

transplanted into the prairies on campus to restore them.

5. Glued and performed data entry of 1140 specimens into the herbarium.

Babysitter: June-August 2010, 2011

This job taught me responsibility, time management, communication skills, compromise and

respect. I will translate these skills into my future work.

Assistant Teacher at Milestones Day Care: October 2009-May 2010

I worked as an assistant teacher with K4 to 2nd graders. I was responsible for creating activities that

fit educationally and age appropriately. As an instructor, I helped the children in their development,

social skills, and manners.

COLLEGE LAB EXPERIENCE

Biology Labs

I took four biology lab courses that had topics in microbiology, genetics, ecology, and plants. I

carried out experiments and have analyzed plant and animal cells under microscopes. I wrote

numerous lab reports and created graphs from the data.

Water Quality Lab

I tested turbidity, pH levels, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus in Lake Michigan water, and the

concentration of copper, phosphate, chromium, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite in water samples. I

wrote many lab reports and created graphs from the data.

Soils Lab

I collected soil samples in the field. While in the field I took detailed notes of the soil horizons, soil

texture, soil color, soil structure, weather, and topography. In the lab I tested soil moisture and the

percent mass of organic matter. I wrote a lab report based on the data I collected from a field site.

Chemistry Labs

I measured chemicals on a scale, used a pipette, a centrifuge, a Bunsen burner, and wrote detailed

lab write-ups.

RESEARCH

Volunteer Research Assistant in Phenology at UW-Milwaukee Supervised by Dr. Mark

Schwartz: April 2013-May 2013, September 2012-November 2012

I collected data three times a week on 103 trees at 27 sites located in the 11 acre Downer Woods on

campus. In autumn, I recorded the overall percentage of the leaves that changed color in the canopy

and leaves fallen. In spring, I recorded the bud burst and leaf out of each tree.

VOLUNTEER WORK

Southeastern Wisconsin Invasive Species Consortium (SEWISC): July 2012, June-July 2011

During the summers of 2011 and 2012 I worked as a roadside surveyor for the towns of Paris,

Brighton, and Wheatland in Kenosha County, WI. I drove along every road recording the location

and size of four invasive species: common reed, common teasel, Japanese knotweed and wild

parsnip.

4-H Youth Development Program: February-April 2012

At Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Milwaukee, WI I helped elementary school children learn

the process of building Lego robots and programming them.

UWM Sandburg Residence Hall Green Roof: October 2011

I helped maintain the green roof above the cafeteria of the residence hall.

Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum: June-August 2011

I volunteered at Hawthorn Hollow once a week removing invasive species. These included Queen

Ann’s Lace, garlic mustard, and buckthorn. In addition I replanted native species and collected

shooting star seeds.

Great Lakes WATER Institute: September-October 2010

I maintained the green roof of the building. This experience taught me the importance of reducing

runoff in cities.
