Research Interests:

The design and synthesis of new ruthenium(II) photosystems for

applications in sensing are a major interest. Various spectroscopic

techniques are used to probe and understand signals generated by

polypyridyl Ru(II) complexes containing hemilabile phosphine-ether

chelates. Our synthetic approach aims at isolation of bis(polypyridyl)

species of d6 transition metals that achieve metal-to-ligand charge-

transfer excited states while taking advantage of the unique binding

ability of hemilabile ligands. Liquid 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy is

a tool for assessing the structure of hemilabile coordination complexes.

Electronic and luminescence spectroscopy are means to record the

photophysical response of complexes towards neutral Lewis basic analytes.

HOMO-LUMO energy gaps are sensitive to inner-sphere host-guest interactions

that result in significant differences in photophysical properties of these

assemblies including excited state lifetimes.
