Nov. 2002 – Present: Howard County Library, Columbia, Maryland
Position: Systems Engineer and Linux Developer
Duties: Develop Linux solutions for public access computers. Build kernels, modify application code, and streamline user interface to create, maintain, and upgrade a secure kiosk environment. Research, design, and implement enterprise-wide group collaboration solutions. Design and schedule SQL-based reports. Provide input on web site and intranet design.
Highlights: Developed the “LuMiX” Linux kiosk distribution featured in Library Journal (April 2004) and on tech sites SlashDot.org and NewsForge.com. This distribution has been used on public computers in all six branches of the Howard County Library system (rated third amongst public libraries in the U.S.) and has been requested by libraries world-wide. Migrated entire email, calendar, contact, and file management system into one central open source collaboration suite. Installed and configured servers for collaboration suite and LDAP projects. Developed digital signage kiosks used by the Horizon Foundation for displaying emergency CERN information. Maintained and added new features to the Howard County Library Chess Club web server, a PHP-based site and chess engine.
Mar. 1998 – Nov. 2002: Library Systems and Services, Germantown, Maryland
Position: Network Administrator
Duties: Manage LAN operations including internet connectivity, virus inoculation, and daily server backups. Perform setup and configuration of computer hardware, monitor system performance, perform diagnostics on malfunctions and perform system repair and recovery. Make recommendations regarding new hardware and software purchases. Manage work order database, licensing, and system inventory.
Highlights: Rebuilt entire network with 10BaseT with Cisco 2600 routers, Cisco managed switches, 3Com dual-speed hubs and switches, and Dell 2500 series servers running Windows 2000 Server and Windows NT 4.0 Server with RAID-5 redundancy. Migrated mail services from Unix sendmail to Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0, later upgrading to 5.5. Developed web architecture on Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 platforms, for LSSI’s Virtual Reference Service, and jobstar.org (averages 188,000 hits per day and is backed by the Wall Street Journal). Designed a web site for the Department of Energy library that won a 2001 Golden Web Award from the International Association of Web Masters and Designers.

Position: Communications Computer Systems Administrator
Duties: Responsible for maintenance, accessibility and software/hardware installations and upgrades of 11 networks, 200 users, and 450 machines. Provide network security, perform diagnostics on malfunctions, and perform system repair and recovery.
Highlights: Deployed and integrated Windows NT 4.0 workstations and created network compatibility with Windows for Workgroups, SunOS, Solaris, and IBM RISC/6000 AIX workstations. Developed solutions to integrate hardware across a multiple system architecture. Hand-picked as team leader, responsible for developing, transitioning and training of IBM RISC/6000 AIX workstations.

Position: Data Communications Technician
Duties: Operate, maintain, and assist in the installation and upgrade of communications circuits and equipment. Configure modems, multiplexors, and secure encryption devices for operations. Troubleshoot circuit failures and repair twisted pair cable and fiber-optic segments.
Highlights: Designed and installed a building-wide, protected, distribution system and a fiber-optic communications wide area network. Authored and streamlined local area network server utility programs reducing processor utilization by 30 percent in addition to freeing up valuable database areas.
