To whom it may concern,
My name is David Rodriguez. I received my undergraduate BS in chemistry
from Quinnipiac University and I just received my MS in Chemistry from the
University of Miami. I am contacting you to inquire about the chemistry job
being offered. I am very interested in the pharmaceutical industry, and I
believe your company would be an excellent place to gain valuable knowledge
that will help me in the future.
I believe that I possess the necessary skills and attitude to be a
successful candidate. Before deciding to attend graduate school for a
masters degree I had worked in the chemistry field for 2 years in various
positions. Right after graduation I received a contract job as a quality
control chemist at Collegium Pharmaceuticals. At Collegium I learned how to
follow SOP's and GMP's as well as being trained in various areas such as
how to work and use an HPLC system to anazlyze drugs. After leaving
Collegium I then transferred to work as a compound manager at Cubist
pharmaceuticals. Over the past 6 months I have worked for Cubist
Pharmaceuticals as a compound manager. In this position I learned how to
use online data bases in order to register compounds and to keep track of
where the compounds were going and what amounts were left for future
testing. I also learned how to use a Tecan Liquid Handler in order to make
duplicate daughter plates as well as aliquoted samples for solubility,
stability and protein binding tests. Using the Gemini computer program I
created specific protocols for the liquid handler involving robotic arms
and pipettes to create samples in a fast and efficient way. Also included
as my duties as a compound manager was to help chemists analyze compounds
being delivered from other companies using a 300 MHz NMR, UPLC and HPLC
system. Lastly I helped create the protocol for how samples will be
requested and delivered to the various departments.
After 6 fulfilling months at Cubist I found a permanent position as a
chemistry technician at Smithers Viscient. Smithers was an environmental
company hired to approve drugs for distribution by the FDA and EPA. At
Smithers I became a product chemist which entailed many responsibilities
such as testing physical properties of new drugs as well as testing drug
concentrations in micro environments. There I used techniques such as HPLC,
pH testing, and UV to test and gather data on these drugs, as well as
followed SOP's. After working at Smithers for 1 year I decided to further
my education by gaining a masters degree.
For my masters degree I attended the University of Miami for the past two
years. I took one year of classes which included inorganic chemistry,
photochemistry and many others. After one year of classes I joined Dr.
Norito Takenaka's group doing hydrogen bonding asymmetric catalysis. In
Takenaka's group I used advanced organic synthesis techniques in order to
create new catalysts to test for selectivity on various dienes. On top of
learning organic techniques I also used the HPLC to help see the % ee of
the catalyst used. While at Miami I also was a teaching assistant and after
one semester as a lab TA I won the honor of the provost teaching fellowship
which allowed me to help teach an honors chemistry class along with Dr.
Douglas Heller. Other accomplishments and jobs I have received include an
REU internship at Harvard University doing SEM on cardiomyocytes, deans
list, and doing organic synthesis research for one year with Dr. Kent
Marshall at the University of Quinnipiac on a model study of decanoic acid.
I hope that I have been able to accurately express my strong desire to work
for your company. I can be contacted at 774-***-**** or by email at
************@*****.*** I look forward to further discussing my candidacy
with you.
Thank you for your time,
David B. Rodriguez
