August 2012-May 2013 - Supervisor: Dr. William Picking
Completed my Honors College thesis, "A Functional Analysis of the C-
terminus of Invasion plasmid antigen B in Shigella flexneri". For this
project, I created S. flexneri mutants with successive deletions from the
IpaB C-terminus and used these mutants to determine how the mutations
affected Shigella invasiveness. This was done by performing phenotypic
assays including contact-mediated hemolysis, uninduced secretion of
effector proteins, and gentamicin-protection/HeLa cell invasion assays, and
comparing mutant results to the results for a non-mutant S. flexneri
strain.
