RESEARCH
Psoriasis of the scalp: an appraisal of current management strategies (2011-
2013):
The thesis aimed at analyzing literature for the
clinical spectrum of scalp psoriasis, efficacy, safety, tolerability and
convenience of medications used in the management of the condition based on
five case histories.
Based on the current evidence topical steroids are
considered as the first line treatment of all severities of scalp
psoriasis, with proven efficacy and tolerability. Other topical agents like
calcipotriol, tar, salicylic acid, and anthralin can be used as adjuvants
to topical steroids, as sequential therapy or maintenance treatment
following induction therapy with steroids. Phototherapy and systemic agents
are considered as second line in severe and recalcitrant cases. Therapeutic
decisions should be based on objective disease severity taking into account
patient's quality of life. Psychosocial support should be offered to all
subjects with quality of life impairment. A patient centred holistic
approach should be considered for management of scalp psoriasis considering
patient's quality of life, formulation preferences along with assessment of
clinical severity. The choice of an appropriate vehicle is crucial in
enhancing adherence and effectiveness of therapy.
Pityriasis rosea- a clinical study (2003-2006)
180 patients were studied. Incidence was 0.45% among total
number of dermatology cases. Male to female ratio was 1.25:1. 67.2% cases
occurred between 15 and 40 years. Herald patch could be located in 51.7%,
the commonest site being anterior chest (33.4%), classic distribution of
secondary lesions occurred in 90%, inverse in 3.9% and localized in 6.1%.
Maculopapular lesions with characteristic peripheral collarette of scales
predominated. Oral mucosal involvement occurred in 8.9%.
On comparing the efficacy of erythromycin with emollients in
causing resolution of skin lesions, statistically significant improvement
was noted in the group of patients receiving oral erythromycin.
