Work Experience
September 2012- Present; Graduate Research Assistant; Johns Hopkins University, USA
Risk mitigated optimal power flow for wind-powered grids
Currently formulating a Two Stage Stochastic Optimization problem to mimic the day ahead and
•
hour ahead US electricity market
Aim to find the optimal unit commitment strategy for operating reserves and location of storage
•
in a grid with high wind power penetration
June-Aug 2012 Summer Intern; Environmental Management Centre, Mumbai, India
Framework for sustainability assessment of mobile phones
Built a framework of a tool to assess sustainability in mobile phones and reported directly to the
•
Executive President of the consulting firm
Single handedly scrutinized the sustainability issues in global electronic supply chains and identified
•
the weak links. By studying product life cycle; legislations, directives, ecolabels and industry
standards, recognized 285 criteria encompassing Hazardous Chemicals, Responsible Procurement,
Environmental Design, Energy Consumption, H&S, Social Inclusions, Management System,
Reporting, Post-Consumer Life and GHG emissions to build a sustainability assessment matrix
Used the matrix to propose a tool to score corporates, suppliers and products on sustainability and
•
provide guidance to attain sustainability
The tool was well appreciated by the Head of Sustainability of a leading mobile phone company
•
.
Feb-May 2012 Graduate Research Assistant; Johns Hopkins University, USA
Reliability and Vulnerability Analysis of a Power System
Worked on a project on Reliability and Vulnerability Analysis of Critical Infrastructure
•
Reported to a Professor in the department and a vising Professor from Lunds University, Sweden
•
Work involved multi-objective binary optimization of power system (IEEE RTS96) to locate a
•
group of system components such as buses and power lines that maximized reliability while
minimizing vulnerability of the grid
Problem was solved using Genetic Algorithm on MATLAB and results were attained well before
•
the deadline
Feb-May 2011 Global Research Intern; GE India Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, India
Process Flowsheet Optimization using Metamodels
Worked with a team of three members on an optimization problem to reduce reboiler duty of a
•
divided wall distillation column
First simulated the divided wall column on ASPEN ONE, then converted the system’s black box
•
into a metamodel on MATLAB and used the metamodel to solve a non-convex optimization
problem
