To The Search Committee:
I am a performance improvement specialist with experience in meeting facilitation, employee
engagement, and leadership development programming. My particular skill is the creation of an
environment rich in collaboration and creativity whether for training, strategic planning, or process
improvement. By listening to organizational challenges and identifying bright spots of performance, I
design customized, just-in-time solutions that ensure enthusiastic motivation from all stakeholders.
Right now you are looking for someone to fill the role of Director of Training and Development that you
are advertising through Talent Retriever. As a nationally recognized speaker, presenter, facilitator, and
author, I can draw upon my experience with organizations from around the world to help you meet the
human resource and organizational challenges you currently face.
Because I am passionate about what I do, I have included below a simple but effective activity that you
are free to use at the end of your next meeting or training event. Confucius Says is just one example of
the many activities I have designed and refined to maximize participant engagement in learning.
In addition, you are welcome to subscribe to either of my two free monthly newsletters. The Firefly News
Flash features a discovery, idea, and activity related to leadership, creativity, or learning. 99’s on the 9th is
a self-contained activity with a 99-Word Story, discussion questions, and interpretation suitable for team
learning. See samples here:

I hope you will add me to your short list of go-to partners and give me a call when you need expert
support in performance improvement, training design, meeting facilitation, or organizational
development. In the meantime, I hope you have great success with the following activity!
Confucius Says
At the end of your next meeting or training, instead of summarizing the main points for the participants, invite
people to review the topic and relate it to their job responsibilities. Begin by distributing a 3x5 card to each person.
Ask them to write down two or three important learning points or insights they received during the training. Have
people work silently and independently for a couple minutes. Next, distribute a fortune cookie to each person and
ask them to find a way in which their fortune somehow relates to one of the items on their card. Invite them to
consult a partner for ideas or to switch fortunes if they are stuck. Ask a few people to share their fortune and how it
relates to what they learned. Follow each with a round of applause and record them on a flip chart so you can Tweet
them to all participants over the next two weeks as a follow up.
