Using a proprietary violence prevention course called Sankofa, I t rained as a violence and
c risis prevention officer in inner-city schools in New Jersey, such as Plainfield and Newark.
M y role required facili tation during outbursts, altercations, and tensions between students
and gangs. I t rained students to use the Sankofa program in order to help alleviate stress,
defuse stressful situations, and find peaceful means for solving problems with others
H I V and Public Policy Volunteer, NJ P ride Center
January 2000 to November 2001
As a volunteer at the NJ Pride Center, I spoke with members both on the phone and in
person about preventing H IV infection and also about how to handle positive test results
either for themselves, a partner, or loved one. Additionally, I helped gay, lesbian,
t ransgender, and bisexual members find resources for counseling, support for coming out to
loved ones, and information on maintaining personal safety in the face of violence or anger.
