PROFFESIONAL EXPERIENCE
Director of Institutional Research, Shawnee Community College, Ullin, Illinois (2013 to
present)
As Director of Institutional Research, I provide overall direction to the College’s
research and planning functions and collaborate with other college departments to ensure
full integration of research and planning activities. I also collect and analyze institutional
data, and serve as a campus data steward to support effective decision-making and policy
recommendations.
Director of Certification and Assessment and National/State (NCATE/ MoSTEP)
Accreditation Coordinator, College of Education (COE), Southeast Missouri State
University, 2006- 2012)
*Southeast Missouri State University has a full-time student population of 11,000. It
is a comprehensive regional, state university, consisting of nine colleges and
schools. It is the only four-year and Master’s granting institution located in the 25
counties of southeast Missouri. The College of Education consists of three
departments: Educational Leadership and Counseling; Elementary, Early and
Special Education; and Middle and Secondary Education. There are 44 full-time
faculty members that teach and supervise approximately 1200 undergraduate
majors and approximately 450 graduate students.
COE NCATE/MoSTEP coordinator (2006-2012)
At Southeast Missouri State University, I successfully managed the data collection
efforts for annual university and college reports, specialized professional association
(SPA) reports and institutional reports. I served on the Dean’s Leadership Team and over
the last three years. I have been proactive in following changes in both the state and
national accreditation processes and have effectively communicated requirements to
faculty and to the unit head through professional development workshops. In 2009, I
developed a unit wide newsletter to disseminate accreditation, certification and
assessment information to all faculty and staff members. In the fall of 2008, I developed a
template for SPA writers, which resulted in the continuing national recognition of eleven
programs, four of which were chosen by NCATE as exemplars. Prior to submission, I
conducted three, half-day Writer Workshops, to disseminate data and to facilitate the
discussion of the SPA process. I then met with each writer individually to assist in
finalizing reports, then uploading them into the on-line accreditation system. I also directed
the ongoing assessment data collection of non-SPA education programs (currently 29
programs) to meet national and state standards. I developed a template for the forty report
writers to use in completing their state reports, and followed the successful practice of
conducting half-day workshops and follow-up individual meetings with report writers. Other
responsibilities included:
served as chairperson for the College Assessment Committee, and the
Conceptual Framework committee.
served as one of four faculty chosen to finalize the national, institutional
report
worked with all departments and Institutional Research to aggregate
data for various state and national reports
designed and delivered formal presentations to state and national officials
participated in interviews during the accreditation visit
wrote responses/rejoinders to the SPAs, MoSTEP reports, and NCATE Unit
Advisory board’s final report
Barnes, P
COE Director for Certification and Alternative Certification (2006-2012)
In January 2009, I added the responsibility of Director for Alt. Cert. to the list of “many
hats” I wore professionally at Southeast Missouri State University. I refined the program’s
methodologies and cut unit costs by 15% by moving the application process and approval
processes from paper to on-line. Furthermore, I researched and wrote the history of Alternative
Certification at Southeast since 1998, for review by the Dean and Provost. Other responsibilities
included:
reviewed and approved approximately 250 certification applications annually
communicated in person, via email and through newsletters with all responsible
departments at the university and with area school districts regarding certification
requirements
communicated with state and national officials regarding certification requirements and
updates
attended state and national professional group meetings to keep current on certification
issues
reported programmatic missteps in regards to certification that could result in litigation
and/or loss of program approval/accreditation.
