leadership on human resource issues. Overall responsibility for business
unit employee and labor relations, recruitment, retention, performance
management, and delivery of corporate initiatives. Provides input and
recommendations on UPMC-wide human resource policies and procedures.
Significant Achievements
> Developed strategy and successfully negotiated collective bargaining
agreements in conjunction with legal counsel with SEIU, Teamsters,
IUOE, and SPFPA.
> Successfully represented management's position with respect to
grievances with 90% of filed grievances successfully defended or
withdrawn by the unions.
> Department ranked 2nd among UPMC Hospitals for overall satisfaction on
the 2012 UPMC HR Delivery Survey.
> Initiated and provided leadership in various initiatives that reduced
workers compensation costs by 25%.
> Restructured the candidate selection process and developed a retention
program resulting in overall turnover below UPMC Hospital Division
average and lowest service worker turnover in health system.
> Assumed additional HR leadership responsibility for UPMC Braddock
effective October 2008 until closure January 2010. Led initiative that
placed 80% of displaced Braddock employees with other UPMC business

> Chosen by the Frick Hospital Board of Trustees to serve as interim
Lead Executive upon the dismissal of the previous CEO. Provided
executive leadership in concluding a successful merger with
Westmoreland Health System.
> Since 1985, held corporate officer positions and worked closely with
Boards.
Human Resources
> Led the development of a new health system employee benefit program
covering three hospitals that promoted consistency, market
competitiveness, and cost effectiveness.
> Redesigned the system compensation structure to improve
standardization, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
> Successfully thwarted two nurse organizing campaigns (PSEA and SEIU
1199P at Frick Hospital and SEIU 1199P at Westmoreland Regional
Hospital).
> Developed strategy and/or participated in union contract negotiations
with SEIU 1199P, AFSCME, PSEA, and PNA. Negotiated significant benefit
concessions from SEIU 1199P.
> Reduced nurse vacancy rate (4.7% to 2.8%) and turnover rate (21.4% to
<11%) through initiation of several new programs, a redesign of the
nursing compensation structure, and new recruitment strategies.
> Developed a Human Resource Performance Report to track and report on
key indicators to the Board of Trustees and senior management.
Quality Medical Management
> Successfully led organization through JCAHO and PA Department of
Health surveys while serving as interim Lead Executive at Frick
Hospital.
> Led initiative to utilize Press Ganey Satisfaction Measurement tool
throughout the health system. Obtained Board approval and funding to
initiate new Service Excellence Program based on the Baptist
Leadership Institute model for improving patient satisfaction scores.
> In collaboration with Medical Director, improved case management
process that reduced Medicare length of stay by over 10%.

Physician Development/Relations
> Created the health system's physician development plan to define
physician manpower needs and improve the overall quality of the
medical staff.
Recruited physicians, negotiated agreements, and established
successful practices in several specialties, including internal
medicine, family practice, OB/GYN, and general and orthopedic surgery,
resulting in increased admissions for the health system.
Information Technology
> Provided oversight in the transition of two hospital information
system departments into one health system department.
> Directed the development of a new health system information technology
strategic plan and its subsequent implementation.
