Relevant Experience

Lab Tech experience

Note: During my time in the Thiele kaolin mine lab I had to calibrate the PH machine at the

beginning of the shift every day. Calibration required sticking the ph probe into a red solution 4.0

then a yellow solution 7.0. Also I had to do “grit tests” I let the kaolin samples sit in the over for

bout 4 hours then brought the metal containers back to the table and brushed every bit of clay

onto the scale and checked the weight and wrote down specs. I also had to log the specs in the

computer at the end of shift. It was typical normal spreadsheet format. Sometimes I had to also

make a spreadsheet and load the listed formulas. The formulas were pre-entered by mine

foreman for each shift. I also checked the pH of the clay. Doing this I had to get 7 flasks and go

outside to the clay spouts and get slurry clay from the spouts. The clay consisted of middle

Georgia coating clay, Mg special clay, Mg brightness clay, and Mg flow feed clay. The Brookfield

test was only did on the Brightness modified clay and the flow feed clay. To do the Brookfield test

I had to get a flask and fill it half full of clay and lower the syringe down by turning the knob until

the clay run through the hole of the syringe. Then I let it mix for 30 seconds after the first 30

seconds I then put the clay in another mixer and let it mixed then brought it back to the Brookfield

machine and repeated the step for the second sample respectively. Some of the chemicals I

worked with were calgon. Soda ash, and sometimes acid.
