As a political science degree holder, a legislative assistant to Representative Mike Gerber, a co-organizer of a
humanitarian journey to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and an independent contractor in the health industry, I have used
my time during my personal and academic career to learn teamwork and problem solving skills that would translate into
success in the public sector. I have obtained the skills needed to engage constituents, NGO’s, and government organizations
in order to build relationships and strengthen the mission of an office. With these skills established I would like to extend
my abilities to your office.
Working as a legislative assistant for Representative Mike Gerber has allowed me to develop skill sets needed to
engage constituents, comprehend multifaceted issues, and create solutions. I have expanded my knowledge of government
resources, and the opportunities they can provide constituents by working with a multitude of bodies such as the Department
of Education, Public Welfare, and Labor and Industry. Exposure to these departments has given me considerable
understanding of the many programs offered by the state, and increased my ability to help constituents obtain services to
enhance their quality of life. The opportunity to organize outreach events in Mr. Gerber’s district office has allowed me to
exercise my abilities in leadership, organization, creativity, and aided in establishing relationships with those organizations
that sponsored the events.
Using my passion for assisting the public I was also able to provide aid during an international crisis that affected Haiti on
January 12, 2010. While students on my campus donated food and clothing to several agencies I decided to ensure that the
people of Haiti obtained those donations by creating a clothing drive with the assistance of Habitat for Humanity. After
collecting clothes, shoes, toys, and hygiene products from local businesses I then traveled to Haiti to distribute those
donations. While on the island I was also able to travel to the Dominican Republic where I also assisted Mustard Seed
Communities, Orphanage for children with disabilities, and helped a group of nurses provide basic medical care for the
women and children living outside of Santiago. .
As an intern in the summer of 2009 under Rep. Rick Taylor I learned excellent skills during a time where most people would
deem the political atmosphere of Pennsylvania to be unpleasant. The recession had finally caught up to the state as well as
constituents and many feared what public services would be cut. As residents called fearful of what could possibly happen
with negotiations in Harrisburg I learned the ability to calm heated passions, obtain and relay information residents needed
to stay informed of the progress in Harrisburg, and appropriately translate their concerns to the Chief of Staff.
Working in a knowledgeable and experienced office with a diverse constituent base has demanded me to establish a
creative mindset, focus, communication skills, and the ability to work independently on a daily basis. I look forward to a
challenging working environment that allows me to grow and support the initiatives of the organization.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Terrell Johnson
