Summer Programs:
MedStart Summer Program- Summer 2008
- This program selects a group of about 20 high school juniors, and it is
focused on giving students a better idea of professions in the medical
field as well as an introduction to college level coursework.
- This program allowed me to develop better teamwork and overall
communication skills.
NewStart Summer Program- Summer 2009
- This program is an introduction to college in which students take
college classes as well as a guidance class in which we learn how to
find and use resources as well as improving public speaking skills.
- This program also had an emphasis on improving communication skills
and bonding with other members of the group.
Border Health Scholar Internship – Summer 2011
- 10-week research internship in which students develop a poster
and presentation to summarize the findings of their research.
The program includes topics that relate to healthcare around
the border.
- My specific project, which I presented to mentors and the other 6 selected
students, was about Telemedicine and its development as well as its impact
in Arizona.
- This program also included a research writing component which greatly
improved my writing skills
Employment:
Part-time Caregiver 2011- present
- Elder and child sitter through Care.com
- Tasks vary but include cooking, bathing, providing transportation,
and overall providing care
University of Arizona Genetics Core, Tucson, Az Jan. 2010- June 2010
- Assisted in the laboratory preparing samples to be sequenced
- Transport samples from one site to another
City of Tucson Recreational Program, Tucson 2007 - 2009
- Responsible for supervision of about 20 kids as well as the planning
of educational activities
- Activities varied in topic but mostly related to science and math
Leadership Activities:
Physiology Department Research Lab (Erik Henriksen, PhD) 2013- Present
- The subject of interest is insulin insensitivity in relation to Type II diabetes.
The studies are mainly focused on oxidants and antioxidants and their effects
on proteins involved in insulin signaling pathways.
- Main techniques performed are gel electrophoresis, muscle incubation,
and data collection as well as analysis.
St. Monica Parish Health Committee Member, 2011- Present
- This committee was formed in order to plan events to help the community
live a healthier lifestyle
- Activities include cooking classes, fitness classes and planting vegetables
- My main project is to put together a health fair for the community to learn
about the resources available
BBBS (Big Brother Big Sister) participant 2011- Present
- Participating in outings and bonding events in order to serve as moral
support to a child of disadvantaged background
Job Shadowing at Angel Clinic (UMC: University Medical Center) 2011-present
- Experience patient- physician interaction as well as helped out with
translations
- Allowed me to broaden my medical vocabulary both in English and
Spanish as well as my communication skills

- Had the opportunity to participate in club events and listen to speakers

- I was responsible for organizing activities to help pre-health students

- Team Captain for HOSA group participation in relay for life event
- Tasks involved leading my team of about 50 to plan for the day
of the event as well as collecting donations and recruiting participants
throughout the year
Festival of Books Science Pavilion, Tucson, Az 2010- Weekend Event
- Assisted with showing animals and with talking about the
physiology of each animal as well as their lifestyle with the
festival’s visitors

- Conference for high school girls from various schools in Arizona
- Assisted with the different events carried out at the conference which included science presentations and experiments
