Professional Experience

ST. JUDE MEDICAL INC., Westford, MA

2006-2013

Principal Engineer

Led the development of a 10 micron resolution intravascular imaging

catheter from concept through high volume manufacturing.

Defined user requirements, design inputs and design outputs. Sole

designer. Coordinated engineers, technicians and clinicians to build and

test the design. Developed strategic vendor partnerships. Applied FEA and

CFD to optimize the design. Tested the devices on humans. Transferred the

design to manufacturing and provided ongoing lifecycle support.

Commercialized the higher speed follow-on product. Interviewed physicians.

Presented at technical symposia. Created the design history file. Wrote

the verification and validation plan, the risk analysis, the FMEAs and

parts of the IRB and 510K

. Designed and brought to market the first practical OCT catheter three

years before the competition, generated 100 milllion dollars in sales.

. Through fluid flow simulations and benchtop human coronary models,

developed a safe way to clear blood from coronary vessels that is now the

industry standard

. Improved the deliverability of the catheter through novel tip and shaft

designs.

. Made the software easier to use by conceiving simple ways to display the

large amounts of data that was generated.

. Improved the value of the product by developing a measure of stenosis

severity to make treatment decisions. Integrated a fast three

dimensional CFD code into the software and developed the physiologic

models of blood flow that allow an accurate answer.

. Developed the first disposable, rotating, reciprocating liquid seal for

catheters, simplifying the disposable connection and reducing

manufacturing complexity.

. Working with physicians, conceived four new catheter designs and wrote 18

invention disclosures

AFFYMETRIX, INC, Bedford, MA

2002-2006

Array Processing Engineer

Designed fluidics processing equipment, robots, array scanners and gene

sequencing disposables.

Led product definition of disposables and hardware. Directed engineers

and drafters. Analyzed field failures and implemented fixes. Reviewed

the entire product line for cost savings and improved reliability.

Optimized the thermal performance of ovens and scanners. Reported to the

VP of instrumentation.

. Led a microfluidics station redesign from concept to $40,000,000 in

annual sales in under a year. Sole designer. Increased the mean time

between failures from 8 to 24 months.

. Cut packaging costs 90% and improved the liquid flow paths by

redesigning the standard cartridge housing.

. Improved product uniformity by designing a robotic oven with one-

degree temperature uniformity.

. Cut of size of a well plate station in half through the innovative use

of disposables.

. Cut 20% off the cost of a precision laser scanner through a simple

alignment mechanism.

ABIOMED INC., Danvers, MA

1998-2002

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Designed disposable and implantable blood pumps

Collaborated with marketing and manufacturing to design and develop

disposable blood circulatory pumps and permanent implants.

. Extended the life of a replacement heart from 3 to 13 months through a

simple modification of the internal liquid flow path. This allowed the

heart to go to clinical trials.

. Reduced the cost of the company's highest volume disposale by 95%.

Innovative valves, pumping mechanisms and external connections allowed it

to operate without anticoagulation.

. Collaborating with an outside firm, designed the first stable implantable

pressure transducer

. Improved product consistency and reduced assembly time by conceiving and

implementing manufacturing fixtures that filled the replacement heart and

tested the trileaflet valves.

. Reduce clotting and infection risks through metal ion and heparinized

coatings technologies.

. Conceived of a hydrodynamic bearing pump that circumvented

patents on that technology.

SPECTRA INC., Hanover, NH

1996-1998

Project Engineer

Designed customer specific ink jet printers

Led teams of mechanical, software, and hardware engineers to build printers

to individual customer requirements. Designed liquid level controllers and

heaters. Developed models for drop spreading.

. Delivered four custom ink jet printers on schedule.

. Improved image quality by managing cross-functional groups.

. Optimized liquid distribution networks and vacuum controls, improving the

reliability of continuous feed printers.

Chris Petroff

SLEEPNET CORPORATION, Manchester, NH

1995-1996

Project Manager

Managed four development projects and led the mechanical design of two of

them.

. Brought a sleep apnea mask to market that was stalled in development

for two years. Worked with consulting groups, junior engineers and

regulatory to bring the product to manufacturing.

. Designed the lowest cost and quietest sleep apnea unit on the market.

Coordinated three consulting groups to develop the blower, the enclosure

and sound control components.

. Managed consultants who developed a sleep apnea moisturizer and a

sleep apnea diagnostic device.

DYNAGEN INC., Cambridge, MA

1989 - 1995

Staff Engineer

Designed ducts and scrubbers for coal and gas fired power plants. Managed

consulting projects. Wrote and presented proposals.

. Provided more reliable simulations compared to scale models by the

introducing CFD to the simulation of spray scrubbers, transient droplet

combustion and smokestack downwash.

. Developed add-ons to purchased fluid flow codes and sold them back to the

developers.

Consulting

CONSULTANT, Groton, MA

1995-2011

. Developed a metering valve for an implantable insulin pump and analyzed

flow consistency issues of pumps that were already implanted

. Designed the ovens and the enclosure of a desktop robotic chip handler.

. Designed the first practical heaters for a cannula based suture welder.

Optimized the design using themal and and stress modeling.

. Cost reduced the heaters of tissue ligation equipment.

. Conceptualized a continuous flow biological mixer using ultrasonic

mixing.

. Performed a feasibility study on an infrared endoscope for controlling

coronary oblation.

Education

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

M.S. in Mechanical Engineering GPA 5.0/5.0

Coursework in mathematical methods, fluid mechanics and heat transfer.

Through a now patented modification, solved an overheating problem with

a Borg Warner home space heater. Developed consumer desiccant

dehumidifiers and reviewed bench test methods.

Tufts University

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering GPA 3.7/4.0 Summa cum laude
