WORK EXPERIENCE
Technical Lead for implementation of Splunk, for Operational Intelligence
Allstate Investments; Investment Technology; Jan 2013 - March 2013
About the project
The project involves implementing Splunk for managing availability of - a)
data, by tracking data transmission across integration paths, b)
applications, and c) infrastructure, with the goal to provide an
exceptional customer experience.
Responsibilities:
Defining vision, solution architecture, sizing, licensing, working through
licensing, contract and infrastructure needs, SOW to hire Splunk
professional services, defining detail design and managing overall delivery
of the Splunk implementation, defining plan for transitioning support to
operations team, planning operational readiness activities.
Accomplishments:
Architected a solution to provide a holistic view of data integration
status (from source through hops to destination), at a record level, near
real-time; Reviewed several tool/technology combinations and recommended
Splunk; Led a POC of the solution proposed; Transitioned knowledge to the
architecture and development teams;
Technical Lead Designer for Application Integration, Data Team
Allstate Investments; Investment Technology; May 2011-Dec 2012
About the project
BIS is a multi-year initiative with a budget of over 50 million, to replace
approximately 120 vendor/home-grown applications with under 20 best of
breed investment applications; Includes implementation of Blackrock's
Aladdin as trade order management system and risk analytics platform, Eagle
Pace as Ref data/MDM/Hub ODS and Eagle's Message Center as API for
integration into PACE, implementation of a new warehouse product and a
performance measurement application; Includes implementation of a new EAI
based data integration architecture with TIBCO EMS as integration platform,
implementation of over 300 data interfaces, near real-time and batch;
Includes integration of the hub with multiple downstream subscribers
including the investment accounting system and the data warehouse; Includes
decommissioning of legacy applications;
Architecture and Design
- Contributed to the design of the TIBCO EMS based Data Integration
application (DIA)
- Contributed to design of the DIA framework services - selection of
services from the Allstate Enterprise, as well as enhancements to the
same; Includes an Events Driven Router, a monitoring, logging and
alerting service, a file transfer service, a cryptography service, a
scheduler service;
- Contributed to defining integration patterns to use, defining
requirements for monitoring the DIA infrastructure;
- Led a proof of concept (POC) of intra-day integration with Eagle PACE
(Ref data/Master data/ODS), identified aspects of the product, that
needed customization for intra-day integration; This helped with
planning the development effort;
- Comprehensive understanding of vendor interfaces and best practices -
BlackRock Aladdin and Eagle PACE, responsible for ensuring integration
with vendor hosted solutions, adhered to Allstate Enterprise security
standards;
- Defined integration processes, activities and tasks, defined ones to
run in parallel versus sequential, synchronous versus asynchronous,
defined critical path activities;
- Defined data transformation strategy and strategy for maintaining and
publishing code sets, including domain value translations;
- Defined naming conventions for file-based integration, Designed
message metadata to support identification of source, data entity,
asset type, intra-day or end of day data, daily versus month-end,
delta versus full refresh - content/context based message routing;
Designed message metadata to support record count-level
reconciliation;
- Designed integration orchestration, SLA monitoring and alerting,
design for activity logging, monitoring, alerting;
- Defined data exception management strategy in consultation with the
business;
- Designed outstanding data exception reports for the data stewards to
support data quality improvement efforts;
- Designed message routing rules based on requirements of data
subscribers;
- Analyzed and optimized processes to support meeting E2E integration
SLA defined by the business;
- Defined reprocessing strategy and corresponding design;
- Designed integration to be event-driven; Designed orchestration of
Investment end-of-day batch; Designed handling of holidays or lack of
activity;
- Successfully defended the application integration architecture to the
Enterprise architecture audit team;
Technical Documentation
- Created blueprints of the architecture and design - solution
architecture diagrams, UML (2.2) sequence diagrams, UML state, and UML
activity diagrams, data flow diagrams and detailed application
integration design documentation; Created a message catalog Wiki;
Operational Readiness
- Facilitated workshops to brainstorm and document, all possible failure
scenarios across the integration landscape from an infrastructure,
application and data perspective, symptoms, monitoring and alerting
available (or gaps in the same), escalation process, solution for
fixing/reprocessing, SLAs, OLAs;
- Defined monitoring and escalation process/contacts to be notified;
