PROJECT WORK: Experimental setup of Hydrogen Engine

Experimental setup of a Hydrogen Engine using a 4-stroke diesel engine

with integrated spark plug. It consists of a 4 stroke 400CC single cylinder

diesel engine, to which a non platinum tip spark plug is fitted to the

cylinder head. The spark plug was introduced to compensate the high auto

ignition temperature of hydrogen. The setup also consists of a cam operated

compressor designed in Catia V5 which compresses hydrogen to 300 bar and

sends it through a non return ball check valve into the fuel line. The fuel

line is fitted to the self actuated fuel injector of the diesel engine

which injects hydrogen at 300 bar pressure. And during the compression

cycle of the diesel engine, a few degrees before TDC, the spark plug

assists in fuel ignition. The compressor is coupled with the engines shaft

using gears with 1:2 ratio.
