The European Organization for Civil Aviation Electronics (EUROCAE) works jointly with RTCA in the development of standards, and publishes an identical document, EUROCAE/ED-14D.

There are five levels of compliance which are, A through E, which depend on the effect a failure of the hardware and would have effect on the operation of the aircraft

RTCA/DO-254, DESIGN ASSURANCE GUIDANCE FOR AIRBORNE ELECTRONIC HARDWARE: Working understanding of DO-254 procedures and policies for avionics hardware standards for airborne hardware as required complying DO254 is considered the world’s strictest hardware standard, and influences other domains including medical devices. AC 20-152 as a means of compliance for the design of complex electronic hardware in airborne systems including, complex electronic hardware devices.

SYSTEM SAFETY ENGINEER: ARP 4761 / AC No: 120-92A

Performs safety assessments, hazard analyses, and hazard tracking in support of programs, conducts hazard analyses including hardware, software, and system integration. Prepare risk assessments, evaluate, and resolve safety design issues taking into consideration incidents and unplanned events.
