Work Experience

08/2012 – 09/2012 Driver, Schneider National Trucking Green Bay, Wi

I went through their trucking training program, which lasted roughly a month. While there I was able to practice the skills I learned when I attended Check-Ride where I had obtained my CDL. I also learned a few new skills while here which were not extensively gone over at Check-Ride; how to trip plan properly, how to use the Qualcomm system and how to do a 45 degree back.

10/2010 – 05/2011 Volunteer Tutor, Library Volunteer, Bryant Elementary Seattle, Wa.

See below, this was a very important time in my life and I wanted to expand on it further for you.

10/2009 – 07/2010 – Security Guard, ORC Enterprises, inc. Rental Car Security Sea Tac, Wa.

What I learned about myself at this job was that when it comes down to it, I am not afraid to use my authority when I know I am in the right. Job skills I would take with me from this experience are leadership skills; when my co-workers had problems or questions they often felt most comfortable approaching me, as well if a customer had a question, complaint or comment about how we did things, my co-workers would send them to me as I made it clear that I was comfortable being put in such situations. I also learned what authority is, and that it is not something you can take lightly, and it must be used contemporaneously with patience. There is proper protocol to follow, in life, at work, and especially when dealing with people who haven't had much rest after a long flight.

12/2007 – 09/2008 – Driver, WESMAR Woodinville, Wa.

While working here I learned how to plan out delivery and pickup routes, where I had to make sure I was on time to pick up and/or drop off and return to the shop at specific times in the day, as we had a lot of different deadlines to make. I also learned the value of being self sufficient and how to really keep myself busy; during down times I would volunteer to help in the machine shop because I enjoyed learning to work with the various machinery. I would also volunteer to help in the shipping department to familiarize myself better with their deadlines in order to better plan my routes. Because of this I rarely needed supervision, and was left to work through my shift on my own.

01/2007 – 12/2007 - Sales Associate, Milltech Marine Seattle, Wa.

This was one of the most exciting opportunities given to me as I learned how to run a small business here, and I was in charge of my own time at all times. The owner put me in charge of this business, and let me do everything from inventory control, customer service (through phone and email), to even keeping track of our sales and accounting in Microsoft Money.

2001 – 2006 Lowes, RPM Professional Services (Home Depot Merchandiser)

While at Lowes I learned the value of working really hard in a team atmosphere in order to get a specific job done. When I started here, I was a night crew stocking clerk. We had one eight hour shift to get an entire freight truck off loaded, organized and then replenish the shelves with the freight. At the end of the night we had to make sure all of the floors were clear of product, swept and cleaned. The last part of the day was checking to make sure that the store was ready for customers; all equipment was put away in storage, all electronic equipment was in the charging bays safely plugged in and charging and all product was neatly faced forward. I earned a promotion here to Millworks Support Supervisor. This was my first supervisory position. What I took from this experience is that for the first time I was really in control of not only my own time, but the time of others within the department where I had to make sure that we had an employee on the sales floor at all times, and breaks and lunches were taken on time. I also had other minor added responsibilities (recognizing when an extra checkout clerk was needed, chasing down empty carts from the lot when we were busy, an ear to talk to when employees had complaints, or customers had complaints). Then as a vendor with in the Home Depot system I was more in charge of my time than anything else, as I had to plan out a whole eight hour shift every day I was employed. I was my own boss here, and would have to plan my day accordingly to coincide with what information was presented at the weekly conference call. There were supervisors whom we could contact, or who would randomly come and visit the store which I was working of course.

Activities / Volunteer Work

This past year I chose to use my time to volunteer at Bryant Elementary School, where I was a part time tutor, and a library volunteer from October 2010 until May 2011. My responsibilities included helping third grade children develop creative writing skills as well as essay writing skills. While working in the library my duties were to check in and out books to children and faculty, maintain organization within the library using the Dewey Decimal System, and help create presentations and activities for children which would help further their knowledge in using the physical library as well as helping them learn to use the library's computer catalog. I am welcome to go back and help at this school any time I wish and will eventually do so as this experience was good both for me, and the school.
