Quality Manager – Steel Manufacturing
Position Summary
The Quality Engineering Manager oversees the quality engineering function for all steel manufacturing operations. This role ensures that raw materials, in-process components, weldments, and finished steel products meet required standards, customer specifications, and industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee quality plans, inspection criteria, PFMEAs, control plans, and process documentation for steel products and fabrication processes.
Ensure proper testing and evaluation of steel materials, including hardness testing, tensile testing, weld integrity checks, dimensional inspections, and material traceability.
Analyze defects, scrap, rework, and process variation to identify root causes and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Collaborate with production and engineering to improve forming, cutting, machining, welding, and finishing processes.
Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and certifications (e.g., ASTM, ASME, AWS D1.1, ISO 9001, AISC).
Lead and support internal and external audits, customer visits, and regulatory inspections.
Maintain calibration programs for all gauges, measuring instruments, and quality equipment.
Oversee document control, quality system maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S).
Promote a strong quality culture throughout the plant, ensuring safety, compliance, and consistency across all operations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Metallurgy, Quality Management, or related field.
3+ years of experience in steel manufacturing, metal fabrication, or heavy industrial quality roles.
1+ years of supervisory or leadership experience within a quality engineering or QC environment.
Strong knowledge of steel properties, heat treatment, welding practices, material specifications, and fabrication processes.
Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
Experience working with ISO 9001 or similar quality management systems.
Physical Requirements
Ability to move throughout a heavy industrial manufacturing environment, including standing, walking, climbing, and bending.
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
Comfortable working in environments with heat, noise, sparks, and industrial machinery.
Work Environment
Steel manufacturing facility with frequent interaction between engineering, production, welding, machining, and quality teams.
Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required based on audits, customer needs, or production demands.
