Direct Support Professional – Job Description
Overview
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides personalized assistance and encouragement to individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities, helping them live as independently as full participants in their communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist clients with daily living activities (e.g., personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication reminders).
- Foster independence by teaching life skills, social interaction, and community navigation techniques.
- Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and health changes.
- Collaborate with case managers, therapists, and families to implement individualized support plans.
- Advocate for clients’ rights and ensure a safe, respectful environment.
- Respond to emergencies, providing first aid or crisis intervention as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; Associate’s degree in human services or related field preferred.
- Prior experience working with people with disabilities (volunteer or paid).
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Clear background check and driver’s license (if transporting clients).
Essential Skills
- Strong communication and active listening abilities.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive, supportive attitude.
- Ability to problem solve quickly and adapt to changing situations.
- Physical stamina to lift, transfer, or assist clients as required.
Work Environment
- Community settings: homes, group homes, day programs, or supported employment sites.
- Schedule may include evenings, weekends, or holidays based on client needs.
Compensation
- Typically $17–$22 per hour, with benefits varying by employer (health insurance, paid time off, retirement plans).
