Control Room Operator (CRO)

1. Role Purpose
The Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for operating and monitoring the processing plant from the central control room. The role ensures safe, efficient, and stable operation of all process circuits through continuous monitoring, process adjustments, and coordination with field operators and maintenance teams.
2. Key Responsibilities
Plant Monitoring & Operation
Operate all plant sections via the DCS/SCADA system (e.g., Siemens PCS7, ABB, Yokogawa).
Monitor process parameters, alarms, trends, and equipment statuses.
Adjust setpoints, flows, speeds, and control loops to maintain stable plant operation.
Respond quickly to process deviations and abnormal conditions.
Process Control & Optimization
Maintain optimal throughput, recovery, and product quality.
Identify bottlenecks, intervene in early process upsets, and stabilize circuits.
Communicate with Process Supervisors and Metallurgists for optimization initiatives.
Coordination With Field Operators
Direct field operators during start-ups, shutdowns, inspections, and manual interventions.
Ensure field checks and verifications are performed safely and correctly.
Provide clear instructions during equipment failures or abnormal situations.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all plant safety procedures, isolation protocols, and emergency response steps.
Ensure safe operation of plant equipment and adherence to SOPs.
Log, report, and escalate safety incidents or hazards immediately.
Communication & Reporting
Participate in shift briefings, handovers, and production meetings.
Record key operational data, downtimes, delays, and events in shift logs.
Report defects, alarms, and equipment abnormalities to supervisors and maintenance.
Start-Up, Shutdown & Emergency Response
Execute plant start-up and shutdown sequences according to procedures.
Respond effectively during trips, failures, and emergency situations.
Maintain calm, structured decision-making under pressure.
3. Qualifications & Experience
Essential
Certificate or Diploma in Mineral Processing, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or similar.
7+ years experience in processing plant operations (iron ore, gold, base metals, or industrial process plants).
Experience operating plant circuits via a DCS/SCADA system.
Good understanding of crushing, grinding, classification, separation, thickening, and dewatering processes.
Desirable
Experience with Siemens PCS7 or similar distributed control systems.
Exposure to process troubleshooting and optimization.
Previous work in remote mining environments.
Knowledge of safety systems, alarms, and process automation.
