Description
Thomas Mechanical & Fire Protection is one of the fastest growing mechanical contractors across South Carolina. We are dedicated to investing in the future of mechanical contracting by empowering the upcoming generation. We will be taking on at least one (1) HVAC Intern for the Summer of 2026. Below is what you can expect by joining Thomas Mechanical to gain hands on experience in the trades.
1. Program Goals
Provide hands-on exposure to mechanical construction by rotating between the HVAC and Piping teams, gaining experience in ductwork installation, HVAC system setup, welding and pipefitting.
Support workforce development by mentoring future tradespeople and potential full-time employees.
Educate interns on field safety, blueprint reading, material handling, and team collaboration in real jobsite settings. 2. Internship Duration
Length: 8-12 weeks (adjustable based on school schedules or project phases with the option to continue)
Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 7am - 5pm with the possibility of overtime
Season: Primarily summer, with options for spring/fall depending on project needs and school calendars 3. Ideal Intern Profile
Students enrolled in colleges, trade schools, or vocational high school programs focused on the mechanical trade, engineering or construction.
Interest in HVAC systems, sheet metal work, pipefitting, or general mechanical contracting.
Must be physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs, working at heights or in confined spaces, and handling jobsite conditions. 4. Learning Objectives
Gain a basic understanding of sheet metal ductwork fabrication and installation techniques.
Assist with installation of HVAC units, air handlers, and other mechanical equipment.
Learn fundamentals of pipefitting for gas and water lines.
Observe welding techniques and other hands-on skillsets.
Understand jobsite coordination, sequencing, and construction safety protocols.
Interpret mechanical drawings, building blueprints, and schematics under supervision. Requirements
Confident working on construction sites shadowing foremen, sheet metal workers, and piping teams.
Able to assist with layout, material staging, and tool handling.
Willing to participate in installation of ductwork, HVAC units, and piping systems.
Help with jobsite cleanup, tool maintenance, and project logistics.
Attend daily huddles, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
Open to shadowing Project Managers in the office to learn how projects are facilitated from start to finish, including planning, coordination, and execution. 6. Mentorship and Supervision
Interns will be paired with a designated foreman or crew lead who serves as a mentor with oversight of the Project Manager.
Weekly check-ins to discuss learning progress, answer questions, and set short-term goals.
Exposure to different teams (sheet metal, piping, HVAC install) for a well-rounded experience.
