Summary: Coordinates the following: department criminal investigations, Traffic and Criminal Prosecutions in conjunction with and under the guidance of RIAC legal counsel, department records management system, property and evidence storage, Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) reporting and departmental annual training. In addition, when directed, supervise specialized units.
Shift: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 7:30AM-3:30PM, Wednesday: 7:30AM-5:30PM
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Performs the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer as directed. Support patrol operations when necessary in a backup capacity to ensure continuous coverage and response capability.
Establishes a friendly and approachable presence while exercising soft policing techniques when possible.
Ensures compliance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and/or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) federally-mandated security directives.
Reviews all complaints and conducts and/or directs all facets of follow up to misdemeanor and felony investigations.
Evaluates complaints to plan investigations (i.e., determine action or resources needed).
Coordinates investigations with other federal, state and local jurisdictions as directed.
Responds to and oversees subordinate operations and evidence preservation at crime/accident scenes.
Maintains the department's property and evidence storage including the approval or disapproval of the disposition of evidence as directed and reviewed with legal counsel, Records Management System (RMS) and the Rhode Island Law Enforcement Terminal System (RILETS) as the Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC), and body-worn camera system.
In conjunction with and under the guidance of RIAC legal counsel, prepares prosecution packages for presentation before RI Courts, complaints, warrants and subpoenas through the RI District Courts and/or Traffic Tribunal.
Coordinates the reporting requirements of the Uniform Crime Report (UCR).
Assists in implementing department training as directed.
When assigned, supervise and participate in the work of an assigned group or specialized unit of subordinates engaged in the enforcement of laws and regulations and in the protection of life and property. Oversee the K-9 program, including the training, deployment, and supervision of K-9 units.
Provides reports to the legal department as directed.
Prepares departmental reports as directed.
Other related duties may be assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Plan, coordinate and supervise the work of K9 officers.
Qualifications:
Must have completed three (3) years of employment as a RIAC Law Enforcement Officer or equivalent experience with another police department.
Pass a written test of 70% and an oral interview of 70%.
Must be familiar with the Rhode Island General Laws Criminal Statutes.
Ability to make decisions under a variety of circumstances sometimes, under pressure.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with department personnel.
Knowledge of the Airport Security Plan, Airport Emergency Plan and Ground Transportation Rules and Regulations. Education and Experience:
Experience as a police department investigator preferred.
Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field required.
Proficient with Microsoft office suite. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
Must meet the required State of RI qualification to carry a firearm used in the performance of duty.
Rhode Island P.O.S.T. certification required which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. • Must pass a required background check for security credentials which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
