Position Summary

The laboratory specialist coordinates most aspects of chemical storage and lab safety for Chemistry, including ordering chemicals for chemistry and biology labs, maintaining the chemical inventory for both Chemistry and Biology, organizing chemical storage, disposing of hazardous chemical waste generated by chemistry and biology classes and research, overseeing safety plans for each specific chemistry lab space, and providing safety training for undergraduate research students and chemistry lab instructional assistants. The laboratory specialist is responsible for setup of all introductory, elementary, and general chemistry labs and for setup of introductory biology labs as time permits, and coordinates updates of the corresponding chemistry lab manuals. The laboratory specialist is trained on the normal function of the Chemistry & Physics department's instrumentation, maintains the department's long-term equipment replacement list, and is the point of contact for repairs and equipment purchases.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. in a laboratory science such as chemistry or biology

Strong organizational skills

Strong oral and written communication skills

Ability to work effectively with colleagues in an undergraduate academic setting.

Appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.

Understanding of general chemistry calculations needed to prepare reagents and solutions for 1000-level chemistry labs

Ability to learn new software applications as needed for inventory and record keeping Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of chemical reactions, processes, and calculations used in undergraduate labs, basic understanding of chemistry instrumentation.

Experience with cleaning and maintaining lab equipment

Familiarity with standard lab safety procedures

Position is contingent on funding.

Working Conditions

This position involves work in an office, laboratories, and chemistry and biology stockrooms. Hours are typically 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. This position is a ten-month contract, and the department is flexible about whether noncontract time is mostly taken in the summer or spread evenly throughout the year to make a shorter work week. As the laboratory specialist is responsible for class setup, time off during the fall and spring semesters needs to be planned and coordinated with the faculty teaching the labs.
