Summary
This requisition expires on December 17, 2025, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date.
Responsible for design, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of Citywide Fiber optic network, multiplexing communication system, and the video security system. Conduct the installation of aerial and underground fiber, fiber optic testing and repair, line locates, and documentation of the optical system. Also responsible for configuring networking equipment including Ethernet switches, multiplexing system, and video surveillance equipment. Work is performed in high-voltage environments.
Essential Functions and Other Important Duties
Essential Functions:
Performs a variety of activities, including defining requirements, assessing infrastructure, and analyzing hardware to meet business requirements.
Analyzes emerging technologies and make recommendations for adoption.
Analyzes industry and market trends to identify impact on system architecture.
Takes lead on system design, architecture, and integration.
Designs and documents key system components, interfaces, infrastructure, and communications.
Functions as subject matter expert and authority for fiber systems.
Functions as lead for fiber construction projects.
Train and mentor other team members.
Make field decisions regarding redline changes and other design considerations.
Senior technical resource for both SONET and Ethernet network designs and implementation.
Performs work in electric substations and other dangerous, high-voltage environments under Electric Supervision.
Installation, pulling, terminating of fiber optic lines.
Constructs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs fiber optic systems.
Documents fiber optic and security networks.
Completes fiber optic underground wire locating.
Input and maintain fiber facilities into GIS databases.
Supports the 24/7 operations of Police, Fire and Electric Utility.
Driving to and from job site up to 50%.
Required to wear PPE and utilize safety equipment as appropriate for duties. Additional Duties:

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High School Diploma or GED equivalency
Fiveyears cumulative experience in the following: electronic communications, fiber optic maintenance and networking experience OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job. Core Competencies:
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for installation and troubleshooting purposes.
Knowledge of IP addressing on computers, switches, and cameras.
Demonstrate proficiency in use of complex test equipment.
Ability to follow troubleshooting procedures and make recommended repairs in the field.
Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers.
Ability to plan and organize.
Ability to read and perform basic mathematical computations.
Ability to communicate clearly and coherently using verbal and written form of the English language.
Strong technical aptitude for learning new applications functionality, configuration, and maintenance processes.
Ability to independently resolve technical matters that have a noticeable impact on operational activities. Preferences:
Completion of an approved electronic trade school
Formal training or certification with SONET networks
Bucket truck experience
Basic Splicing Certification Conditions of Employment:
Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required
Must meet the Civilian Hiring Standards of the Denton Police Department
Must pass a physical examination.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to differentiate colors.
Must be able to respond to emergencies at all times, by being placed on call or standby duty.
Must be able to work above normal heights; 10-60 ft. using safety equipment.
