Purpose:

The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in compounding, preparing, labeling, and dispensing medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist in accordance with New York State Education Law Article 137-A and USP <795>, <797>, and <800> standards. This position supports safe, accurate, and efficient medication use through proper aseptic technique, completion of all training and competency requirements, and adherence to departmental and regulatory policies.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

Compounding & Preparation

Compound, prepare, and label medications using proper aseptic technique and PPE in compliance with USP <795>, <797>, and <800> standards.

Maintain required skills and certifications through aseptic testing, written exams, and recertification.

Assign appropriate Beyond-Use Dates (BUDs), ensure proper medication storage, and follow procedures for hazardous and controlled substances.

Clean and disinfect work areas and equipment per established procedures.

Pharmacy Operations Support

Accurately prepare and fill medication orders under pharmacist supervision.

Maintain automated dispensing systems and unit-dose carts; deliver medications to patient care areas.

Support medication reconciliation, billing, and restocking activities.

Participate in monthly inspections and inventory management to ensure medication integrity and availability.

Safety & Compliance

Follow all department policies, SOPs, and regulatory standards.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment; report safety concerns promptly.

Employ proper handling and disposal of hazardous drugs, controlled substances, and pharmaceutical waste.

Maintain confidentiality and compliance with hospital and Joint Commission standards.

Training & Professional Development

Complete assigned educational modules and technology competency assessments (IV workflow, robotics, EMR).

Participate in continuing education and staff training to sustain required skills.

Support onboarding and training of new pharmacy technicians.

Customer Service & Teamwork

Communicate effectively and professionally with pharmacists, nurses, providers, and staff.

Demonstrate service excellence and teamwork within the pharmacy and across hospital departments.

Contribute to quality improvement and departmental initiatives.

Education & Licensure:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Completion of an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.

Must meet all requirements for licensure as a Registered Pharmacy Technician in New York State.

Certification through PTCB or NHA preferred.

Must complete all NYS and USP-mandated training, examinations, and competencies. Experience:

Prior hospital or health-system pharmacy experience preferred. Contacts:

Frequent contact with pharmacists, providers, nurses, and hospital staff. Physical Demands:

Stands and walks most of the day; lifts, pushes, and pulls carts and supplies.

Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity for compounding and data entry. Working Conditions:

Hospital pharmacy environment with potential exposure to hazardous medications, disinfectants, and infectious materials.

Must follow all USP <800> protective standards and safety protocols.
